Learn something everyday! I have to admit I don't have a large knowledge of jeeps, and this is the first time I came across the term "franklin jeep". Am I right in assuming this means a post-war civilian jeep?

Not really. It is a typo. It should be "Franken", as in Frankenstein.

Generally understood to be a mixture of parts thrown together to make a "correct looking" Jeep - much like Frankenstein's Monster.
