Wiffle tree help

can anyone tell me if the ((early?)) wiffle tree attatched to the ward la france in picture is the same as modern one used on M62/816 etc? as these seem to have holes for chains in them for lifting (as) in pics sent to me? .and would a wiffle tree (as in pic) permit faccilitate towing without driver steersman in the towed vehicle. any advices (and or pics of usage) appreciated.
