Here's a change to a post on the 5 ton forum... here because of increase liklihood of answer from a multifuel expert.

My M915A1 starter died yesterday recoverinig a trailer. Have pulled the starter and will try to have it rebuilt today.

I have several NOS Prestolite starters set up for 5 tons... NSN 2920-002999-6216. Look like MIL STD starter for a deuce or 5 ton (depending on alignment of the housing for the drive gear).

My question is whether that starter is universal... and whether I can rotate the end on the body to install it iin the 915A1.

I understand that the same basic 24v starter was used in most all MIL STD vehicles, whiich would get me on the road real fast.

Thanks for your help.

Since the starter on the 915 is bad, might as well pull it. You can then compare "nose cone" stick out and tooth count to see if it will work. Not what you wanted to hear, but something to do till a well versed 915 expert comes along.

The deuce is the odd duck. It uses a 12 tooth bendix. The larger engines use an 11 tooth bendix. Mount holes should be the same though.
