Is anybody else's wife tired of hearing about finding a tank in the bushes? Sounds like the makings of a fun get-together in November. I would definately try to come. So what is the name of this local museum?

Well,SHOOT!!:evil: I ain't gittin' any paint flakes to thumbtack to my shop wall am I???!!!Oh well, I guess if Steel Soldiers helps to get it moved, I could help by sending a donation and then I could brag about how such FINE oganization (that I happen to be in good standing with) went to heroic lengths to get this important job done.:-D(seems to me there was a thread on here not too long ago about a fella discussing moving an m60 for a museum)

This would be excellent P.R. for SS and maybe there could be T-shirts for the memories:-D

couple 5tons, couple heavy tow bars, i bet we as a group could get it moved. 2 5tons in front and 2 in back. just heavy towbared together. id think 4 trucks could supply enough braking power, and tractive effort to move it.

LOL, If there really is interest in a mini-rally to move the tank, I will go discuss it with the museum, and make sure they have a location ready etc. If they have or can have, and would like the help, we can sure have a mini rally here. Some good spots around for camping. Just better not be when the game reserve is open, I'm busy those weekends !!!

We've moved our M60's with a 10,000lb forklift that they use on base called a M10A with the 400lb Heavy Towbar (and heavy is an understatement). Just unhook the tranny at the final drives so all you're turning is the track and it will move it. Don't know if I would try to take it a mile like that, might be a little hard on the 10A transmission.

And no you don't have to worry about it getting out of control due to speed, the 10A doesn't go fast enough in low gear to have to worry about it and the tracks have enough resistance to them that they stop pretty quick once you quit pulling.

Hey dittle,

I have NO experience around an M60, so I really have no authority on how freely the chasis would roll, but I know that even on the slightest grade, my 432 will roll away if it's in neutral. It's much lighter than an M60 at about 13 tons. I'd bet you know more about what you're talking about than I do- I would only suggest caution if it were being towed and it got away from the host vehicle. Fifty five tons won't stop on a dime! JMHO:grin:

I would think a couple of D-8 Dozers (growzerless tracks) would do it since tanks roll fairly easily if the track(s) aren't frozen however can you imagine the permits needed especially if there's a bridge or two involved. Then there would be insurance but thats a minor issue, the biggest would be the permits.

Totally agree Yohan. Should have noted that we have only done this on flat ground :-D. Anything with a grade and we get another one of our 60's to do the work. With the 10A if you go more than 2 or 3 mph pulling one of these you're going way to fast, normally our ground guides have to slow down their pace when we move something like this as we take our time to prevent any mishaps like you are describing.

I used to work at a Readymix plant, and we had a D-9 working to break up the leftover concrete. I helped load it a few times, and this is how we did it when it went out for engine repair.

Winch it.

Then engage the transmission once on the trailer to serve as a parking brake, and block the road wheels on top and bottom securing the chocks with long bolts on either side of the roadwheel. Then finally chain it to the trailer tightly, and chock the tracks. All in all, took about An hour and a half.

(Only problem is, we had a Kenworth T600W tractor with a headache rack, and a massive winch anchored to the frame, to pull the D-9 onto the trailer..)

I did notice there are twin eyelets welded on the front hull. I'm sure with a HEMMT wrecker, or twin dueces and some snatchblocks it would walk onto a drop deck. Anyone around that area with a wrecker?

Hell maybe the local NG unit will lend a hand if we enquire with the HQ S-3 for some PR attention. PR is a helluva motivator. Anyone got the number? Or better ideas?

>Related concerns, traffic lights, low clearances, and aquiring the tractor and trailer. Not to mention, coordination with local law enforcement. Getting it on the trailer, and THERE legally, is the hard part.. Once that's been strategically over come, cake from there on out.

Other thought would be to call in a local wrecker company that performs highway 18-Wheeler recoveries, and divvy up the bill, they would tow it, but they would need a escort, and a trailer to get it there.<
