A lot of folks gripe and moan about the sprag transfer case in a deuces - you hear darn few people complain about the front axle drive in the five ton. Kinda proof that the sprag system ain't half bad, ain't it! Difference is, in the deuce, a mechanical linkage selects the forward or reverse sprag, and in the five ton an air valve controlled by the transmission shift top selects the front or rear sprag.

So, front axle engagment is automatic when the rear wheels slip slightly, so long as you hear a "shhhh-thunk" as you move the shift lever from forward to reverse.

Best wishes,
David

the 5T setup has it's problems too. the air valves tend to stick and not work when the trucks sit for long preiods of time. usually R&R with a good cleaning fixes that.
