It's apart.
Brought it to the automotive shop in beautiful downtown Meadows of Dan and asked Wally for a little help. He put it in his press and after a few snaps releasing the pressure, it came apart. "Just stuck" he said.
Looks like there may be some minor surface pitting on some splines, but nothing major. With a new freeze plug and cross it should be good to go.
This application between two axles that don't move very much may have been the problem, no exercise.
