You saved me some time - thanks. The hose on the passenger side is completely broken in two. I'll replace both sides. They are very easy to get to. I'm sure that is the problem.

I happen to know since the HMMH lost 4WD in a rare case when I needed it. Got out and heard air escaping at a front wheel.
Replaced both hoses and have had functional 4WD since...as far as I know. At least there's no pressure loss.

I'm having a hard time determining where exactly this portal axle leak is coming from and thus how to fix it or what part I need? It's the front driver's side axle.

The other axles don't have any grease on them just the green paint. So I guess this one has been leaking for a while though I don't recall it being noticeable dripping onto the inside of the tire like it is doing right now.

4WD and Synch lock still work fine last I checked.


It's definitely an oil leak. At first I thought my omni-pee dogs had gone under there and peed on it but my first clue was that only one was wet. "Hm...they usually mark every tire....something must be up", I thought to myself.

Does anyone know where or how to get the bit/tool holding thing that goes into the side toolbox? I think it's some kind of molded plastic or something. But I can't really carry my tools properly without it it seems because they rattle around.

Also, the clamps that hold up the jackhammer and drill - are they supposed to be metal on metal with the tool or is some kind of rubber missing?

If you look in TM 5-2420-224-24P-2 on Pages 106 and 107 you will see the tool tray, Item 26.

You will likely need to find a FLU419 that is being cannibalized to find that tray.
Also, the clamps that hold up the jackhammer and drill are metal on metal with no padding. It is surprising to me that they didn't design the clamps with some rubber strips for padding.

Thanks for this info. I will probably do some kind of heat formed ABS sheet or something. Maybe I can just lay the tools out on the bench, put a sheet of ABS over it and heat it with a heat gun until it relaxes over the group of tools. I really want to keep them with the unit but the thought of them bouncing around in there makes me very sad.

Or, could someone send me a top-down photo of it so I Can see the layout better? I could almost see me putting together a wooden tray with either cleats or routed out sections to hold things together.

I changed the hoses on both sides, although only one was broken. I found the proper 5 mm ID hose at Autohaus AZ - one meter for $9.95. Took me about 15 minutes per side to replace. My 4X4 now works perfectly.

I removed all the tools and bits, and the tray, since there are other things that are more useful to me that are kept in the toolboxes.
Anyway, if I wanted the bits and things still in there, and nicely separated, I'd cut out foam for the job.

One thing I did with the tool cabinet is drill a 3/16 inch hole in the lower rear inside corner to allow water to drain out. It is almost impossible to keep rain water from leaking in that tool cabinet if the FLU419 is out in the rain, even if the gasket is in good condition. The tool tray is a two-edged sword. On one hand it keeps the tools organized and elevated off the bottom of the tool cabinet, where water accumulates if a drain hole is not drilled. On the other hand, the depressions for the tools collect water if a substantial amount of rain water leaks in. I was lucky in that my FLU419 came with a brand new set of tools which were painted and had no rust, so rain water has a minimal impact.

that is a good idea.
