Here's the shorter version for those who have a hard time finding a decent parking space or just have a short driveway. Looks like fun, don't it? lol

not sure if I like the short length... and parking spaces here in MT are usually pretty huge since 2/3rds of the population drive either a 3/4 ton quad cab long bed or a dually.

Another idea to throw around... Maybe swap out the rear axle to rear steer??? Would certainly help with low speed maneuverability...

You should consider making the back canopy removable, like the back of a Ford Bronco or International Scout. You could slide the assembly in the slots that hold the troop seats. My concern with the concept in general is that the height in the back may be too limited for practical use but if it is solely a show piece then it wouldn't really matter.

Height in the back shouldn't be any more limited than any normal SUV. It will be longer and wider than a standard SUV, and I'm not sure about what height yet. I think more than anything the SAV-Thanks RangerBob!- would be for cruising the town, scaring the locals, and all around fun. Would obviously have to do some shows with something like it though...

In a standard SUV the rear passengers enter and exit through the side doors of the vehicle. If you plan on having people enter and exit through the rear then height may be an issue because most people would have to crouch down pretty low to work their way toward the cab end of the bed. That is of course assuming that you want the canopy height to be about the same height as the roof of the cab.

Edit:
Now I see that in the picture/rendering it looks like you are planning on using a m105 bed. If that is the case you would have more height since it sits on the frame, whereas a stock bed is about a foot above the frame.

I read that thread a while back, but that isn't what I am shooting for. I would certainly have the interior more finished than that.

I wasn't planning on using an M105 bed. The original plan was to fabricate everything from the "2nd cab" back. This way it would sit down maybe an inch from the frame. And I do want the roof the same height as the roof of the cab.

If the new cabin were built as a stressed member, I wonder if it would add enough stiffness to the frame to counteract twisting under moderate articulation?

There have been one or two recent threads along similar lines. One SS person was going to create some drawings - not sure if they were ever posted. Another person was contemplating grafting a Suburban or Expedition body from the A-pillars back to provide a ready-made cabin but still preserve the awesomeness of the Deuce front end sheet metal.

Grafting an existing SUV body would be kinda neat, but are the dimensions right? For my idea, I want the whole thing to scream Deuce, not Deuce and Suburban.

I'll have to do up a sketch of the rear section. Anybody have a picture of the back of the cab of a Deuce without the bed in place?

We talked about that one in this thread... http://www.steelsoldiers.com/deuce-modification-hot-rodding/77414-suv-deuce.html The issues are flex at the cab joint and weight. The construction is straightforward enough once those details are worked out. You can make it look like an Oscar Meyer Weiner-mobile if you're willing to spend the time and money on it. So far, nobody seems to have found it worthwhile. I look forward to the build thread.
