Im going to buy a M818 before the end of this year. If i bid on one on GL I will just have to bid high enough that the dealers cant resell at that point and give up.

The 818 will stay until I die or cant drive it anymore along with my M1028.

Im thinking I dont need 14 or 18 of these trucks. A couple will be fine.

I believe that was provoked. After all, some one is crying because there are people willing to pay more for something than they are, and then says he wont like him or respect him for it. WTF?
I appreciate all the replies that are informative, either the dealer or the collector. There are lots of good points. I think we can do without the snide remarks though. I was raised old school. I give respect when it is earned. I do not know any of you personally so I have no basis for respect. I don't have to agree with you, doesn't make me a bad person. It also does not mean I am "crying"...... Let's keep it informative, not personal attacks. Cam

I have no problem with the business side of MV's. Although, I would be interested in knowing how one buyer can move so many 5 ton trucks. I know one buyer picked up 11 5 ton cargo trucks in one auction. Where are the buyers for that many trucks? I don't see that many trucks on e-bay.

This thread has progressively gotten worse all day. It appears to me to be 5-10 guys ALL arguing with each other.

Whining & crying about "dealers" or for-profit buyers, makes almost as much sense as crying about commercial vehicles "driving up the price of diesel or gas"!!!

Who do you think buys & sells all the parts you need to fix your projects? If everything went to the scrap heap.....you would be S.O.L. on the side of the road with a leaky radiator or broken drive shaft.

I would suggest THANKING people that are out to make $$$.....because without them, there would not be a hobby.

I'm not even going to touch the BS about "honoring the military" because you bought a military truck. I give active military members a 10% discount at my business. Want to bet which one they get more from, my discount or your daily driver?

If you want the truck, bid more or stop your crying when you get outbid.

What some of you are failing to realize is that the big dealers are fixing these trucks up to sell overseas (legally they can if they fill out the right paperwork at the State Dept) to buyers who are still getting a decent deal on a very capable 6x6 5 ton truck.. Dont belive me, call Memphis, Clarks, or TNJ Murray.

Alot of the HMMWV's from the USMC/UD "auction" are now in Morrocco and other countries...... But thats OK, the less of them there are just make mine worth even more...

Well what started out as one guy's venting about a subject definately brought out the opinions on both sides of the fence. I personally see both sides of the story as legit statements (as I'm sure most people have by this point), but I'm a little suprised by some of the replys posted on here. This is a hobby for everyone to enjoy and CAM just had to blow off some steam about a particular frustration associated with it. Now you have guys from one end of the spectrum (not even owning a MV yet) to the other (dealers) putting out some posts attacking CAM. WTF guys, is this all the more mature some of us are when we get questioned online? He has a valid point and if you don't like it don't take it personal; we all involved in the same hobby here. The dealers have valid points as well; they do go thorugh all the GL hassle/fees so you don't have too. You can also inspect/drive a truck and say NO easier with a dealer than to bid online at a vehicle you have never seen or sat in. 2cents
For the record, I "OWN" my M109, the government just won't give it to me yet. :)

Well let me introduce myself then:

CW2 Dale Campbell, still active duty with 17 years active service, three deployments with a 4th coming up. Many guys here on this site are former servicemen/vets, while some are still serving like myself......there is your basis for respect.

Now that I have vented here is my two cents, Dealers and resellers do not want to buy high anymore than you do. If a dealer/reseller does buy high it really cuts into any possibility of making a profit. This happens on all auctions even E-bay. At a certain point a dealer will stop bidding because a line has been crossed where they no longer have a profit margin. Did they drive the price up? Most likely. But if you bid and won a vehicle you probably got it for just over what they were willing to pay (their opinion of the equivalent wholesale cost)

Which means that you still saved money as you most likely bought it for less than they would attempt to resell said vehicle for. As an example I won a M1008 CUCV for $1900 my competition stopped bidding at $1830 because if they kept going they would have to much $$$$ tied up in the vehicle to make a profit. I still came out ok since these things can sell for 3-4k on average.

I just met a guy who bought a nice looking Deuce for $800 and then drove across the country from Alabama to Washington. To echo all the others watch and wait, when you see a truck decide for yourself what the maximum you would pay for it is and then bid that amount. You will get what you are looking for eventually.

I have lots of family active stateside. I own businesses to make money. I would never say that I build/race motorcycles to honor anyone. I do it to make money. The difference is I have never heard of motorcycle racer appreciation day....... I use our stuff for Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Military Appreciation Day, etc....... We lose money honoring Vets and love doing it. There are a few people in this thread trying to throw a flaming stick in here just to make me flame back. No thanks. I was taught "bit dogs holler". This is my opinion and I can express it. You have one too. Why must you say I "am crying"........ Not one single person on this forum could make me cry. That is dumb. I have tried to read this forum and mingle but it seems like the few dominate and the rest don't want "their rath"...... I don't roll like that. I give respect when it is earned. I know their are some like minded people here and they have posted in this post. Then you have the aggressive ones that want to make me out to be a whiner... Why can't I express my opinion with a personal attack. I have not attacked anyone. Cam

maybe the government should do means testing and sell us the trucks based on what we can afford to pay?

or let the new guys have first choice at lower prices because the senior guys already have some trucks, just to make it fair-er.

Or maybe everyone should just pay the same price, like russia

Bottom line is everybody wants to get a good truck cheap. I've been known to buy a truck for resale. I only buy on the lower end of average prices so I can give people a good deal when I sell it. The best way to keep me from buying a truck for resale is outbid me :wink:.

How would you suggest people keep dealers from bidding on so many trucks? Make a rule that dealers can't bid over a certian amount or only bid on a limited number of trucks? Not going to happen because we still live under a free enterprise system. GL is a MV dealer also and will do nothing to try and keep the prices down.

Maybe the economy and a lack of resale will force the price down.........

The lack of deuces in October (when supposedly they will all have been surplussed out by) will DOUBLE the current prices.

Bottom line --> now is the cheapest you will ever buy one. And.....they are HALF the price of a decent 4 wheeler.

Well, I think the big problem you have cam, is that you are looking at the prices of 5 tons. Deuces are relatively plentiful, and not all that pricey yet. But the supply of 5 tons seems pretty low, and that there really hurts the bottom line bids.

So, as mentioned before, you may just have to wait for one to slip through the cracks and go a little cheaper.

You ought to have seen what a completely flooded out, submerged up past the dash for 2 weeks 5 ton wrecker went for right down the road from me. And I'm assuming he isn't a dealer. :razz:
