I figured that the reading may be from the batteries and I was surprised by the heat, so I reckon you are right about it being shorted out inside.

I had to change out my batteries recently, and while I was working on them I wasnt really paying attention to how I was moving the negative cable that goes from the Shunt to the battery, and the cable wasnt clamped. So now the lug on the shunt end...

I recently purchased a reverse light kit on ebay - I dont have it just yet so I cant comment on how the install goes.
What the guy said in the description is that the Ambulance HMMWV has a reverse light, and that it taps power from the horn circuit.
