mt654cr transmission shifting charateristics and tendencies discussion

Brock - I have the same harsh 1-2 shift. It's worse under light acceleration. I'm gusseing its magnified by the backlash / takeup in the transfer case and drive axles. The 1-2 shift is much smoother under full power, as a result I floor it every time a pull out from a stop. I doubt its...

mt654cr transmission shifting charateristics and tendencies discussion

I was referencing your last paragraph beginning with "also please let me know". I paid closer attention to the converter when I drove the truck this AM. The converter will unlock in 2nd gear if rpms drop to around 1200. It seemed locked up in all other situations in gears 2 thru 5. 1-2...

mt654cr transmission shifting charateristics and tendencies discussion

Lindsey97 - Your last paragraph describe how the transmissions in my 2 trucks operate. I'm sure the T/C stays locked, as I'm able to lug the motor down to around 1000rpm before downshifting if I'm very easy on the throttle. ( doesn't mean its correct, but thats how they both run) They do...

mt654cr transmission shifting charateristics and tendencies discussion

The converter locks up in 2nd gear and stays locked thru 5th. After the 1-2 upshift there will be what "feels" and sounds like another upshift where the rpms drop a few hundred. Thats the converter locking up. To my knowledge it remains locked until slowing to a 2-1 downshift. I find...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Rmtaunton - thanks. She was actually having a melt-down because I wouldnt let her hold the nozzle and fill the tank. Two yrs old is a little too young for that job. I look the same way when paying, which lately has been a tank every week or 2.

    M939a2 overheating/excessive coolant pressure

If you're thinking compressor, how about running the engine with the compressor unloaded, or its discharge piping disconnected so it never has a chance to build any amount of pressure.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Today I had the tires buffed / ground down to get them in true. Took away 90% of the shimmy and bounce. A few of them were really out of round, including one which had never been installed before.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Made a Bikini top. Spliced and glued the loop/ rubber rope section for attachment points.

    "Bikini" style cab top

Here is my attempt at the bikini top. I cut out the rear section above the window zipper, and cut a strip about 4" wide along the very bottom. I spliced the bottom strip on to the rear of the roof so that it has loops/ attachment points. The rubber rope is tied to the top frame causing the...

I'm considering the small Roadranger (RT-6610, 6613 or overdrive versions of these), however they are only rated for 600 lb-ft of input. Maybe a larger 10 speed with the smaller SAE 2 clutch housing would be a good fit. It would not have the LOW gear that the 13 has, and may be a few inches...

So who has bumped the power on a 6CTA cummins

For those of you who have installed new GSK's, have you considered using a better harmonic balancer? Only reason is that I remember seeing notes in the parts catalog that the OEM balancer was for 2100 RPM or lower.

So who has bumped the power on a 6CTA cummins

CSM Davis - You are correct about the intake caps. I removed what I thought was a different design to find it was only an additional screen as you described. Thanks for setting me straight. Took the truck for a quick ride with the cap removed. No more sucking sound through the screen...

Bringing this back up. Anyone try this swap yet? I'm considering 9 or 10 speed box. Low-low gears in the transmission aren't really necessary due to low range in the transfer case. An overdrive gear would be nice, along with something a little less than 1:1. I wonder how the transfer case...

So who has bumped the power on a 6CTA cummins

The intake piping and air filter canister look like they should flow pretty well. What would an acceptable pressure (vac) reading be post filter, before compressor inlet?

So who has bumped the power on a 6CTA cummins

I turned up the full fuel / rack travel with good results. I noticed the sound of air rushing through the mushroom cap intake screen on my m923A2 when the motor was wound up under load. There is not a lot of surface area for the air to enter. My 931A2 tractor has a different shape inlet cap...

    "Bikini" style cab top

Anyone with an M939 truck try the bikini top yet? How did it turn out? I'm wondering how bad the exhaust from the stack will be sucked into the cab. I had planned on making one from scratch, but after seeing the photos I think I'll go with M1's mod. Thank you for posting this M1!

    Working On The M923A2

I can't really help you with specific TM pages. Hopefully someone will post a few screen shots of the schematics. Sounds like you're letting a bit of air into the system. Does the brass pipe plug you installed have thread sealant on it?

    Working On The M923A2

The transducer is used with the STE/ICE diagnostic tool (test port under the dash). It has no control over the either start, protective box, etc. A2 trucks have no electric priming or lift pump. 8.3 6cta pumps are engine driven with a hand primer.
