Really great info Keith. I've got the brand new 24V starter sitting on the bench right now, I'll be sure to get my hands on a bracket for the front to make sure another bolt doesn't snap (I swear it came to me that way haha).
I'll pass along the drilling info to Tom. It sounds like a really...
Lookie here! Day 1 and I'm already getting so much done. I've got all 3 belts off, theyre missing teeth and cracked, I'll be replacing them with wide V belts, I heard those were better! Gonna go get them sized and ordered at Advance tomorrow.
Question that came up, my power steering pump...
First and foremost, the truck has been converted to 12V, but John at Hillbilly Wizard hooked me up, and I'm going to be stripping the mess of wiring out of the truck and putting an intact harness back in. She's going back to 24V guys!
I laid it out in the garage and my friends and I went over...
Hey guys,
Figured I'd post one thread and keep adding onto it now, considering I'm beginning work on my CUCV and I'm coming up with questions from all directions.
This is my journey to get my '86 M1008 up and running, and all the problems I'm facing with it as I find them and fix them...
Yes, correct, I've got a M1008. I've been eyeing Spicer products for their lifetime warranty, that's some good peace of mind. 7 locations - I'm missing one then. Two at the front axle, two at the front driveshaft, two at the rear driveshaft. Which one am I missing?
Edit: Wait I'm stupid...
Thanks for the feedback ezgn. Super helpful. [thumbzup]
So if I'm understanding you correctly, front wheels to front axle I'll need 2 Spicer SPL55-3x ujoints, one for each side. The front driveshaft to the front diff takes 2 ujoints, a Spicer 5-1310x at the front axle and a Spicer 5-795x where...
Hey y'all,
Back at it. Dropped the front driveshaft to get a clear view to drill out the broken starter bolt and whaddya know, the u-joints haven't seen oil in probably 25 years. Needle bearings fell apart. I want to replace all the u-joints, figure the rest are about the same. I'm looking at TM...
Have you checked your ground connections? A lot of times I've seen electrical gremlins it could be traced back to a ground issue.

I'm getting help on this project from two mechanic friends of mine, one who worked on CUCVs in the military and works on trucks/cars/motorcycles every day, and my other buddy has worked on cars/trucks, especially Chevys, all his life. He works at a hydraulic shop, but does a lot of diesel/motor...
My buddy's got a few at his shop and he's pretty straight with a drill, gonna get at that next week when he's available again and the weather clears up. He agreed though that a left handed bit should do the trick, thanks.
I appreciate it - I'll be placing an order with you guys today. I know it won't be brand new, but refurbished in good condition, all in tact, is a LOT better starting point than where I'm at with it now.
I'm gonna assume John is the guy who runs the HillbillyWizard site? You think I should try it? I agree, if I got the truck towed to a shop to take a look at and fix the wiring they'd probably charge me a couple grand haha
Edit: the harness is $299 I just looked again, still seems like a really...
Hey guys,
Got under the hood today dealing with my starter problem... for any of y'all following the start of my struggles, the second starter bolt was snapped off.
Anyway, I finally got it in the garage and got a good look at it. I found a lot of melted wiring, hot wires stripped down to bare...
Appreciate the advice man, thanks. Hopefully going to get back at this project when I get off work, so I should have an update by tomorrow. Hopefully I can get the old girl to crank and start again, that'd make me happy.
10-4. I will get back under the truck today and see if I'm missing a bolt or if it's broken. There was definitely an additional hole next to the one bolt I found on the bottom. Sounds like my friend was right... (not that I'm ever going to admit that rofl) If that bolt is broken up in there I...
That's what my buddy and I are going back and forth about. He is swearing to me that there should be two bolts in the bottom of the starter, I only saw one (yes I did see a hole where a second could potentially go, but this is an aftermarket 12V starter, I'm not sure if the second bolt would...
