Ok, here we go…..
Just got the cross member installed. Not nearly as hard as taking it out and prepping the new one! Had to spread the frame a bit to get it in but she went in ok. Here are some pic’s:
Made the trip up to Ft. Meade last week to pick up my newly acquired M1009 from GL. First off a big shout out to maddawg308, good to have the company for the drive there and back. Thanks man!
The recovery was uneventful, batteries were dead, which turned out to be a good thing, so we winched...
Doghead, my man!!!! About time you chimed in. I was really hoping you would. I hallway expected you to post with all sorts of diagrams, algorithms and schematics! Yeh, I think this has about played out. Thank you all for your ideas and input. Interesting ideas and good info.
Cheers….
Sigh, as stated, the goal is to see if it can be done. One of the results would be to save $$ on the extra battery. But, thanks for your helpful ideas.
I feel your pain! I have one too, not quite that bad, but a PITA no less. I just purchased one from GL that looks as if it came right out of MIL service and everything looks intact. I did the resister bypass, put new batteries in and she fired right up!
A big plus buying straight from MIL...
So, If I understand it correctly. While towing a M101A2 with my CIVI truck, if I used the above adapter, without changing the 24V bulbs, it would not work? AND, if I change out the bulbs to 12V ones, I would need to swap the wires so they are the correct brightness? Is that about right?
I...
Good stuff Mistaken1! That is about what I was thinking, seems simple in theory. A few questions for the MV challenged:
1. What does COTS stand for?
2. Is the HMMVW a pure 24V system? 2 X 12V’s like the CUCV or 1 X 24V battery?
3. Why would a 12V alt not charge the 24V...
Okay look, we can play the “why” game all night. That is not the goal of this exercise. We never would have made it to the moon if JFK listened to all the naysayers asking “why”. No, he said, here is what I want, get it done! No offense taken but I’m looking for answers, not people asking me...
Please do not take my humor/sarcasm for disrespect. I value each and every comment and am just trying to interject a little humor to keep the thoughts coming.
I’m no electrical engineer but I would think that simply adding a 24V alternator to charge the 24V battery and leaving the 12V...
Good grief, are you really that bothered by the black type? Okay, Porky, point taken, I won’t post in black anymore. I did not mean to offend anyone’s sensibilities out there or purposely make the post hard to read. I will try to make my other posts more forum friendly and read worthy.
P.S...
I got lucky. The one I found, and picked apart, was in really good shape. The owner of the yard said a guy brought it in a couple months ago and all that was wrong with it was a blown transmission. By the time I got to it the motor, hood and gauge panel was gone. I walked away that day with...
Okay, calling all Engineers………….
Here is the scenario, I have a buddy that is a pilot and has access to an infinite supply of 24 Volt small airplane batteries. Here is the question…..Seeing how about the only thing on the CUCV that uses the 24V power is the starter, would it be possible to...
No kidding! I was able to find a local bone yard with a couple K5’s with some good parts. I just had the pull a cross member and sway bar off one for me and they just cut the frame rails in front of the motor mounts and said “here you go”! $75! But they are getting harder to find now.
