My son was able to inspect the lot of 20 or so that the two of ours came from. He eliminated any that looked iffy. That left about 6 that we bid on until we each got one. All they required before lightoff was a really good look over (inside control box, wiring on the gen head, piping, etc)...
That's a really nice looking job Rosco! Gives me pause to think. . . will probably still go ahead with sched 40 pipe but I was planning on cutting one of my SS flex lines & using a couple of pieces as vibration isolators - starting off right at the exhaust pipes with them. The sched 40 pipe...
lol - I work for a plumbing / heating distributor. I have plenty of 2" pipe available as well as standard fittings - tho I may have to ask one of our customers to weld me up "Y"
lol - doesn't have to be - I'm in the hvac business & we sell a 'weighted' damper that will swing open when the pressure gets to great (or reverse it so it gets sucked open on a drop in pressure). If you know any installing hvac contractors in your area they might have a 'junk' one laying around...
Thanks for all the replies - I think I'm going ahead with it. Right now the genset sits between 2 garage doors & I have the SS flex lines (when used with laundry setup?) that I just stretch out the doors onto my gravel driveway - puts the ends about 6 feet away & pointing away from the garage...
Has anyone tried this? I have been thinking about using a "Y" fitting to twin the 2 1-1/4" exhausts into one 2" pipe. Any know issues? The only thing I thought of was the possiblity of some back pressure, I think the "Y" fitting should negate that.
John I am confused by your statement, perhaps you can help this old fart understand it :) I can see where there would be some current flow through the neutral but if the neutral is grounded where is the 'voltage' measured from? I get that there is some I*R drop in the wire but I would imagine...
Or this thread could be titled, "How long could I procrastinate before finishing my ammeter monitoring box?".
I finally finished installing the digital ammeters on top of the power distribution box of the generator. I used 2 Chinese digital meters with 2 current transformers. Its a simple...
Hi SteveH,
No need to think about a 2K roundtrip :) Fort Meade is less than 5 hours away and they have plenty of these pretty much continuously in their auctions.
My son & I picked up 'pristine', less than 5 hrs on the clocks, units a couple of years ago. They were trailer mounted & both look...
It seems to me that if the OP's concern is protecting against an overvoltage condition a true 'crowbar' circuit would be a relatively inexpensive solution. A crowbar (iirc) basically 'shorts out' the circuit almost instantly when the overvoltage point is reached.
An appropriately large triac...
Its permanently in place with my wiring coming down from the ceiling - here is a pix while I was installing it. The flex conduit goes into 1-1/2" PVC pipe back to my xfer switch in the basement. I need to trim back the flex conduit to install the ammeter box.
Ok, I've dragged out this project too long already :)
Finished the assembly of the ammeter add-on yesterday, now just need to mount it on top of the electrical distribution box on the generator. My digital 0-100A AC meters require 12 volts so I had to put an old open frame power supply to use...
I'm sure that will be fine 1800 Diesel. In our market the most popular electric heater size is 50 gallons and there are 2 4500 watt elements (usually non-simulataneously on). If you do 'jerry-rig' your water heater be sure that the relief valve is piped close to the ground - jic it ever blows...
Sorry edgephoto, I work for a distributor :( we (hopefully) don't get anything back :)
About 2 years ago we converted my daughter's new to her condo from a warm air electric heat unit to a high eff heat pump - I should have thought about saving the old one.
I might have a line on one tho thru...
Just a suggestion 1800 diesel. . . the element(s) you pull out of that elkectric water heater can NOT be used as a load in free air. They must be immersed in water - self destruct time in the air is a matter of seconds.
fwiw if you are looking for a 'load' for your genset, try talking to a...
Good post Triple Jim! I also picked up current xfmrs & meter from that Ebay seller - was a little concerned with him being in Asia but he had good feedback and the items eventually came :)
I purchased the digital meters to go with the transformers and picked up a new electrical enclosure that...
