That's the AAMVA, but I have been unable to locate any specific info on that topic.
But while we're at it, FYI, more evidence of FMVSS-compliance by milvehs: Here's a clip from Army Regulation 385-55 dated 12 March, 1987 about Prevention of Motor Vehicle Accidents. Interesting reading...
FWIW,
You guys will make a much bigger impact on your legislators if you TELEPHONE their offices, than if you send an email.
How many junk emails do YOU get every day? They get way more emails, and at some point they get ignored.
A ringing telephone is pretty much impossible to ignore...
Maccus,
That's great news, both that you have a legislator willing to sponsor such an amendment and that he's on the Trans. committee. Many times it seems to take a few attempts to get things right. Keep up the good work.
In case you face opposition from your DMV, you might spend some time...
So true... A few comments:
DOT's absolutely monitor what goes is said on vehicle-related forums. Putting Tabatha's name out there was unfortunate. Her disappearance was predictable. Forums are our hope, pm's are our salvation.
Anarchy is no answer. Laws are what makes this country tick...
There is some probability, but I don't know if it's fair to call it high. Many (perhaps most?) ORUO HMMWV's have remained off-road.
Nevertheless, initially many HMMWVs were sold with clear (not ORUO) SF-97s. A clear SF-97 means the US Govt. decided that the vehicle was eligible to be titled and...
Maverick,
I just saw this thread. Too bad it wasn't on the Politics subforum before this. Sorry to hear what's gone on already. Hopefully I didn't miss too much in reading this thread over.
As I understand it, the bill is passed and off to the gov.??? Politics and legislation can be...
No, it TOTALLY matters. Some Marine Humvees WERE originally surplussed with clear unrestricted SF-97's. But the fact that many others were later sold as ORUO (Off Road Use Only) does not make them all ORUO. That's why it's imperative that a clear unrestricted title be accepted as eligible for...
Yeah, maybe. Maybe not.
Here's the definition of "conditional title" straight from Idaho: Conditional title: A title issued for a vehicle ten or more years old when the applicant is unable to present ownership documentation sufficient to satisfy normal titling requirements. Conditional...
Hmmm.
Obviously, it's a good idea to ensure that the VIN matches the title when buying a vehicle. Since you're buying from a (presumably licensed) motor vehicle dealer, it's probably an honest mistake and will be rectified promptly and you get a matching title. Hope it all works out...
FYI: A new bill - SB-864 - currently before the Wis. legislature would legalize registration of former-military half-tracks: http://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/raw/proposal/2017/-2169
If you like this idea (and who wouldn't?), please contact your legislators and support it. Ask your legislators...
Be very cautious about the specific wording, so as to make it do exactly what you want, and not do what you don't want done...
I like the line about the vehicles having been manufactured in accordance w/ dod mil safety standards, as it acknowledges the MIL-STD requirements. Even mentioning the...
FWIW: It's not a NHTSA label, it's a FMVSS Certification Label. FMVSS existed prior to the creation of NHTSA.

NHTSA is an agency. FMVSS are the equipment requirements.
Great idea. The more sponsors, the better.
Legislators work to pass legislation, it's their job. They like to pass bills that their constituents support, so they get re-elected next time around.
If you can get legislators from both sides of the aisle, that's even better. This should not be...
Commofreq,
Good reading!
I believe you are correct. IMO, the words "under title 49 CFR part 500-599" are crucial. Without that, your situation would be different.
This is a perfect example of how important it is to read the actual statute/s involved. Each state has it's own laws, even...
Valence,
I'm like that old Skynyrd song: I know a little. But I don't know how to do what you're suggesting. I'd LOVE to have some place to make all this stuff accessible to others here. One of these days, I just ain't gonna be around...
I believe MVPA just put a lot of it online...
Well, perhaps.
Here's a download version of FMVSS by year, direct from NHTSA: https://www.nhtsa.gov/staticfiles/communications/pdf/Lives-Saved-Tech-Timeline.pdf
EDIT: Please not how FEW FMVSS requirements apply to a 1971 truck!
I don't find anything in there about the exemption - just...
