The Saga Continues... M1008 front end reassembly

As some of you might recall, around September(ish) of last year my M1008 flipped me the bird. I suppose it was a mutual thing, as I failed at PMCS'ing the seals/fluids/etc. in relation to the front axle/steering system. Well, the "mechanic" STILL has my truck. I went by yesterday for a little...

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

I'm sure he has plenty of work, but he shouldn't have taken the cash and then given me a completion date EVERY WEEK. Honestly, it's a lot of both.

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

Had to get it towed to a mechanic on November 6th (ultimatum from head of household). That guy still has the truck, just started working on it this past week. I am not a happy camper about it. I wouldn't be so mad if he didn't say every week "yeah I'll have it back to you this...

Admitting the CUCV to the hopsital...

You're telling me, dude. That fellow had pair of big brass ones clanging around.

    I already miss the smell.

Admitting the CUCV to the hopsital...

I have not. I'm sapped of funds, energy, and patience for a little bit. Good to not have to see it there lifeless at least.

Admitting the CUCV to the hopsital...

There was a dent in the front diff cover. When I took it off, I noticed there was some gouging on it. Not good. I told him if he gets me safely back on the road I'll be happy and he'll be a stud.

Admitting the CUCV to the hopsital...

yep. For some reason, all the pics I send from my blackberry to the computer come out sideways. I forgot to rotate them before I attached them. Standby

Admitting the CUCV to the hopsital...

Admitting the CUCV to the hospital... and letting the professionals do it. With limited time, tools, and space, I finally (with some prodding from the higher ups) called a mechanic. Threads for reference- http://www.steelsoldiers.com/cucv/76386-lower-king-pin-bearing-cap-stuck.html...

    My first heartbreak...

A semi local board member had one. Also picked up a sliding rear window from him. That made a huge difference with the heat.

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

My caps are marked "L" and "R". Saves me some trouble. All I'm wanting to do is just check to see if the seals need replacing. However, I need the stars to align so that I can have more than one person here at the same time. I also need a second pry bar so both of us can crank away. Still...

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

Just want the gears out so I can clean/inspect and replace any bad seals. There was water in it, so I imagine they're bad. I will get pics as soon as I have a second person available. So far I've gone solo on everything.

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

Yep. All the way from 10 to 34p. Also have the dana 60 manual.

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

Put it in neutral, I'm not dead yet. Good sign. Unfortunately, now I got to get dressed for work. I did give the drive shaft a little turn, didn't make much of a difference. Tomorrow the saga continues...

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

I have the rear wheels chocked (any time a jack goes under any vehicle of mine, it's the first step... learned that one in the Army), and the front axle is resting on jack stands. Parking brake is applied. So, I SHOULD be good. Zero, this quote- "As long as you use common sense and put saftey...

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

For some reason I was thinking you wouldn't allow ME near the truck haha. Nevermind, I'm retarded. When my dad gets back, I'll have him hold the bar while I take a pic.

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

Dave, That's just harsh, man. Another question, and it's probably a dumb one. If I were to take the truck out of park and put it into neutral would- 1. I die 2. Break things 3. It be easier to rotate the driveshaft

Basically telling me this part needs to go first

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

Yes... However a buddy of mine who is a diesel mechanic and is familiar with the Dana 60 says the pinion yoke HAS to come out the back before the gear pack will come out the front. Have I overlooked this fact? I can't see that anywhere. I'm not one to argue, but nobody has mentioned it here.

Want to borrow/rent axle/diff case spreader in Louisiana...

This has been my pattern- Stare at it, curse a little. Insert pry bar in one of several places it will fit and I can reach (axle still attached to truck) Crank and bang Rinse and repeat. I've done this for just over a week now, and the only movement has been an every so slight rotation of the...
