Get a battery heater pad. It will give the battery the power it needs for cold starts or I should say make it easier to use the battery power stored. I live in Montana and this is all I need during the coldest winters...
Roscommon is the only one I would trust or recommend. Now I buy my starter, belts, alternator and more at the local auto parts store. I use my truck in some remote places and it was important to me to be able to get parts easier.
We've had the coldest weather in a few years and the coldest since I converted my M1008 to 12 volt. It has been down to minus 30 with highs below zero. I let my M1008 sit for a week with only a battery warmer plugged in. After two cycles of the glow plugs she started right up. It did take...
If this was a dedicated daily driver I would do the Roscommon conversion. Regardless of understanding the 24 volt system, my truck is more reliable than ever. I can buy parts from the auto parts store locally, belts, starter, alternator, hoses and everything else. We get cold here in Montana...
I just bought a 12 volt gauge and used the original hot with a good ground which just happened to be dangling under my dash if I remember right. I don't regret converting using the Roscommon method. I need a reliable truck when I am way back in the woods in Montana. For me 12 volt is more...
I would guess the fuel filter is not going to fry your batteries. Something is wired wrong. Since you said you are converted to 12 volt I would study the Roscommon method and see if you can find a problem. It is hard to say if some other method was used and most don't want to help as they...
When you do the 12 volt Roscommon Conversion ( I am not advocating doing so, just passing along info) the instructions tell you to use the ground from the DS alternator to ground the PS alternator.
The Wiki tells you to use the DL7157 on the DS only as it does not need the isolated ground...
I had to tighten the belt on my rebuilt alternator because my new belts stretched. I could tell something was up by the voltmeter. Lately it seemed like every week I was tightening my alt belt when I realized it may be slipping in the adjustment bracket on top.
I bought a 3/8" external star...
The passenger side alt and the power steering belt are the same as the K30 Chevy Truck. Search the forum for the driver side alt belt. One thing I learned is make sure they are tight and check them again because they will stretch. I bought the parts and paid a shop to rebuild my alts. They...
I converted to 12 volt. The Roscommon method is the way to do the conversion. You will still need an understanding of the 24 volt system or you may get confused such as batteries going from series to parallel and maybe a few unexpected wires not shown. The alternator belts after converting...
My voltmeter started moving from 13-14 volts on my rebuilt alternator using CUCV Electric parts. Using the search I read where the voltage regulator usually works or goes out all the way and it was probably a loose wire or belt. I found my new belt stretched. Problem solved from reading this...
I think you did the right thing. I too converted my 1985 M1008 to 12 volt using the Roscommon method. I could not afford to get stuck in the backwoods of Montana during the winter as it could become life threatening. One of the good things I found is now I can buy parts over the counter and...
