Glad to hear you made it home from the big trip. The local tow should not be bad.
Cucv freak was more than willng to come through for you in a pinch, how cool is that.
As far as the tranny, the quickest way to get your rig back on the road is with a used tranny. Sounds like an easy weekend...
I'm with DRGREG with the GSA auctions. I bought a nice M1028 from a GSA auction about a year ago. It was a nice turnkey truck for $1800. The GSA uctions don't have any add on fees. That whole GL waiting game just isn't for me.
I was driving my truck down the road within an hour of bidding on it.
Like 91W350 said, they can come from different places. I've owned 5 and bought them from GSA, Police auction, and private party.
In Mass You could get a title for it several ways.
1)The tow company could aply for one (they should do that if they hope to sell it).
2)Any used car dealer could...
My 81 longbed stepside has a 40 gallon Suburban tank in it (I haven't done it yet to my M1028 but I'm thinking about it) I hate to post pics of a non CUCV on this site but I'm just trying to show how it's done.
The link to the Captkaos site has some great info on this subject.
Basicly you...
Have you looked on craigslist? In Mass the going rate for a good turbo 400 4x4 trans is about $250. Complete 3/4 ton parts trucks can be had for about $500.
Was this a GSA auction? If so prices seem cheaper in youir neck of the woods. Around here in Mass at the GSA auctions M1009's go for about 2K, and that is for 1 with some rust.
I don't know if I would recomend a cucv or any other 25+/- year old vehicle to someone who is not mechanicly inclined.
As far as a daily driver keep in mind that the 1008/1028 have 4.56 gears and a highway speed of about 50/55 mph. The 1009 has 3.08 gears so it can keep up with highway traffic.
The SF97 does not have a provision to pass the vehicle on to the next guy. In Mass dealers have a Title reasignment forum that they fill out that they attach to the SF97 that lets them transfer ownership to the buyer.
As far as a privat party sale, they cannot transfer ownership on a vehicle...
I think people run into problems because they buy a CUCV from GL or GSA and try to resell without getting a title in their name.
I know in Mass you cannot transfer a vehicle on the SF97 unless you are a dealer. A private owner must take the SF97 to the DMV and apply for a title before they can...
I'm not a huge fan of aftermaket body pannels but i have used front fenderwells from a company called Certifit in the past and they fit as good as the GM ones.
The more I read about GL the more I love the GSA auctions. I was driving my M1028 with the SF97 in hand within 30 minutes of winning the bid. With GSA it happens almost instantly, the half hour was with me hanging around watching a few other trucks get auctioned off.
Being new to this it does...
Just trying to level it out ( I already have a 81 stepside with a 6" lift and 35"s on it). I already put a 2" block of wood under the front tire and was happy with how it sat.
I figured the weight of the 6.2 might compress the spring down a little to get me close to 2".
