I Have been considering the same set up on the drop side 5 ton. May opt to install the hoist at the front of the bed next to the spare tire. On the 5 ton DS the foward two feet of the bed sides are fixed. So no problem with troop seat clearance, but the cargo cover would have to be removed to...
I purchased my rebuild kit from Memphis Equipment, thought the kit was less than $100. The two large copper rings in the kit were a little small, ended up using the old ones instead.
Hope this is helpful
Check with Vehicles of Victory located in NY (?), they are a supplier of parts for the CCKW. Most people who replaced the hydromatic used the 5 speed / transfer from the CCKW.
Good luck
I had the opportunity to display the GMC M215 this past weekend at the Culpeper VA. Air Fest. For a small regional airport, they put together an impressive show.
Some of the highlights
- Nalls Aviations Sea Harrier
- Yak 9
- 6 T28 Trojans and 11 T6 Texans / SNJs in the air at one time
- B25...
Check all the rubber brake hoses, replace anything that looks bad. On the military brake system if you loose one line = no brakes. When changing the intake / exhaust manifold gasket check to see if the aligning insert rings are there. Be careful not to over tighten the manifold bolts.
Nice...
Hunnicutt's excellent book on halftracks covers some info on the Autocar T17 halftrack. Shows a picture of one with the radio box.
Have any halftrack spare parts available?
Thanks, Karl
Hey fellow GMC M-series owners, you guys running DOT 3 or Silicon? I have silicon in the M215 and works great, haven't done the brakes on the M221 yet.
Price sounds good if the truck is solid! See if you can barrow a military medium tow bar, should be an easy trip home behind your M35. Just take your time on those PA hills. Parts are not that hard to find for the M211 series. Only issue is a possible transmission rebuild if needed. I have two...
Hey Brad,
I have been putting off repairing my leaking rear main seal on the M215 for too long. Replaced it once already, M543A2's outline is spot on. When I replaced my rear main seal I discovered that the crank surface that the seal rides on was pitted, The new seal lasted about a year before...
M211
I'm always happy to share my learning curve. I have always run military DOT5 silicon brake fluid in the M215 since rebuilding it 5-6 yrs ago. Usually have to top off the resevor once a year since the silicon weeps past the cup seals. Wal-mart batteries work fine, Usually end up pealing...
Hy-tran
Excellent so far. This year has been very busy with work, so only 150-200 miles on the M215 since the oil change. I like the non-foaming quality of the Hy-tran.

With the number of halftracks presently under going restoration demand and prices for parts will continue to be high. Until all the rebuildable halftracks are completed I would not expect anything to change if not get more expensive.
With very few Shermans, Stewarts or M8 / M20s remaining or...
