I've had the same thing happen recently after replacing my starter....just a click. Turned out the cable from my solenoid had just enough corrosion/gunk on it to cause the problem (on the solenoid connecting side). After a good scrub I'm good to go. Maybe try checking that wire out...
Thanks, Parlay! I just got home from work and yanked the thing off again. I'm going to bring it to work tomorrow and to the checks you've suggested. I'll let you know what I find.
Thanks again!
Well, I brought the starter into advance auto parts because they have a new starter tester that can check 24v starters. The down side is no one knows how to use it. So, after an employee fumbled with it for a bit, he go the bendix to extend but the gear wouldn't spin. Then came the smoke...
I just did both u's on the rear shaft. Brute Force joint part number: 2-3011BF. Tankie's method will work, but I've never been easily able to push the caps into the yolk. A big **** hammer is usually needed. What I do, is get a cap in place in the yolk hole and put the end of the actual...
I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the info! First thing I'm going to try to do is borrow my buddies M1008 starter to eliminate any other possibilities. A starter rebuild would be a welcome, easy fix for once.
Thanks again!

I've got to add on here....what type of used oil is OK? I've got a whole bunch of 5W-30 from past oil changes on the wifes car. If I filter it well enough and mix with some diesel, can I throw 'er in the tank and save a few bucks?
Firecontrol, see this post:

Inside it are several ways to manually prime your system and check your fuel pump.
I just had the same problem. If you pull the fuel pump (or lift pump..same thing) plug one end and suck on the other, then plug the hole you sucked on with your tounge and see if it holds a vacuum. If it does not, there's your problem. If it does, re-install (carefull of the push-rod...grease...
