    Gear vendor vs. 700r4

700r4 would be lighter than the TH400/gear vendors combo, and would be shorter, keeping your drive shafts closer to their current length. The 700r4 has a lower first gear, so that's a benefit too. It would be a ready-rebuilt transmission, you wouldn't have to spend money on rebuilding the...

    M1010 is running

The inside of the ambulance is 65 inches tall, 75 inches wide by 109 inches long, if my last set of dimensions was correct.

    M1010 rear axle swap

I found that swapping in a 700r4 worked out better than re-gearing. 1st gear is now lower than it was with the TH400, making it accelerate a bit better, and the overdrive works great on the highway. Shifts smoother than the TH400 as well. I haven't taken my M1010 off-road at all, but I...

    New M1010 owner, Central California

I'm keeping the original heater for now, though if I do a 12V conversion down the road it will probably go away to be replaced by an RV style propane furnace instead. Of course, I could use the space the heater takes for the propane bottle storage, leaving the passenger side frame for a second...

    New M1010 owner, Central California

I'll have to figure out whether I want to install it forward with the desktop behind, or vice-versa. I'd like to put it up forward, but the plumbing / venting may determine where it goes. I'm not sure I want the fridge exhaust too close to the fuel filler, so mounting it in the rear corner...

Got a kitchen.... Well, I've picked up a Thetford Porta-Potti for it, and just found a kitchen (complete setup) from a Volkswagen Westfalia, so I now have a sink, water tank, 2 burner stove, and three way (propane/AC/DC) fridge, all in a nice little cabinet. I have to splice or repair the vent...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

I've thought about fitting a lock cylinder, but I don't want to cut a slot on the fuel filler surround for it to engage... I may have to fab up a plate / tab for it to hook to. The transmission shop set it up to lock up, not sure if it's 2-3-4 or just in 4. No controller, it's all hydraulic...

    M1010 Recovery (private sale)

Be sure to have the service lights / blackout light switch in the center off position when the ignition is off, it may leave a relay energized that will deplete the batteries (this is only a problem on the M1010, the relay is for the lighting inside the ambulance). Field day should be fun, I...

    M1010 Recovery (private sale)

She sounds great! Looks like the batteries are charging correctly too. I fired up my M1010 today at 34 degrees (frost on the windows), glow plugs cycled faster than they do when it's warm but she fired right up, and sounds just like yours at idle. :)

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Yeah, I know what you mean, the 700r4 was a great improvement for my M1010. Pulls away quicker, shifts smoother (my TH400 shifted HARD), and it's low geared enough that it will break both tires loose if I mash on it. :) Being able to hold a conversation while driving 70MPH down the freeway is...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

M1010 Fuel door installed I picked up an aluminum fuel door kit off of Amazon, and got around to installing it today, after approx 10 gallons of fuel walked off (darned thieves!) :( Still need to find a better locking solution than the dzus fastener that came with the kit... may have to...

What are you paying for your CUCV tags

$90 now for the M1010 ambulance in California, after I got DMV to change it from a commercial plate / pickup to a passenger plate / pickup with permanently mounted camper (body type PM, it was the closest match in their system to the ambulance body). The plates were $240 a year (weight based)...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Just picked up my M1010 from the transmission shop, the 700R4 swap went well, and it's MUCH better on the freeway, and much quieter too. The lower first gear helps it get moving better too. I still have to get used to the different shift points, and the kick down may not quite be working...

    M1009 in Martinez California

If you're looking for a TH400 and not in a huge hurry (should be done in two weeks), I'm upgrading my M1010 to a 700R4, and it has a good TH400 in it right now, 23k miles (if the odometer is correct). PM me if interested. I'm in Hanford, CA, the transmission will be at a shop in Visalia. I...

do all CUCV's drain their batteries?

You have to leave the service / blackout light switch in the "off" (middle) position, or a relay is left engaged that will drain the 12V (front) battery. At least, that's what I remember reading somewhere.... :)

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Put my personalized Amateur Radio call sign plates on it earlier in the week, and drove it over to the transmission shop in Visalia that is going to do the 700r4 swap, so they could see what would be involved (very little, since the TH400 and 700r4 are the same length, and I have a complete...

Ham Radio Operators / Steel Soldiers

My Alinco is a dual band / dual VFO HT, so it should work fine with the crossband repeat like you described. Something about the controls on the Alinco make me favor it over newer radios, though it just may be familiarity. It doesn't quite have as wide a receiver, no broadcast FM, but it does...

    New M1010 owner, Central California

Nice plans for a traditional style camper. I'm going to keep the bench on the passenger side, but mount a jack-knife couch to it (keeping the storage and diesel fueled heater). The remainder of the facilities will be carried loose (coleman stove, engel fridge, porta-potti, etc.), but I may...

    New M1010 owner, Central California

Just a small update, fixed a few minor problems and she's still running great. 4th of July weekend I'm going to get some of the radios installed, and maybe take her for a field test (though with 100+ degree temps predicted, I might not go far.) CA DMV re-did the vehicle classification from PK...
