Ham Radio Operators / Steel Soldiers

If I buy the new Kenwood digital HT (with the built in TNC and GPS capability, it's on the cover of QST this month), it has SkyCommand II and can not only use the crossband repeat, it gives full remote control of the HF side of the radio via a handheld. They make a mobile rig that has...

Ham Radio Operators / Steel Soldiers

KC7DRT (dirt, it was my sequential assigned call back in '94) here, M1010 to motorhome / radio shack conversion in progress. I have the mobile mount / power cabling for my Kenwood TS-2000, along with the remote control head so I can operate it while driving. I have a 2M antenna to mount where...

    Ham Radio Operators

I have a mount and remote control head to put my TS-2000 in the back of my M1010. The remote control head is so I can operate while driving. I also have a Lil' Tarheel II screwdriver antenna... my M1010 was purchased to be my amateur radio shack, and also for mild camping use (it will have a...

    My EX-Police M1010

Thanks for the pictures. I might just do it the cheap way and run some dryer duct temporarily from the van AC unit... but that is a nice install. I think you're right, that does look like a conversion van add-on AC unit.

    My EX-Police M1010

That must be nice to have both box and cab AC. How is it plumbed to both? Is that a military mod, or aftermarket?

    Diesel in the oil

I've had the same problem with similar mechanical fuel pumps on gas engines, I agree that you should look at the mechanical fuel pump too. The diaphragm in the pump is exposed to the crankcase, and when it rusts out it leaks fuel into the oil.

How long for glow plugs to work?

It usually takes 30 seconds to a minute (in colder temps) for my glow plug light to go out on my M1010, with the stock glow plugs at 24V. Well, I assume they're stock, the previous owners didn't change them, though the military might have.... When my batteries were miswired and I only had 12V...

    My EX-Police M1010

Yes, you should be able to clear the banks kit, since it comes over the top of the engine. Yours should be just like the civvy truck with air conditioning, as far as the accessory mounts go.

    My EX-Police M1010

I wondered about the RC panel mounts on mine as well, they've been removed from the sides, but they're still on the roof, so I should be good. Nice looking M1010. Mine was also ex-police (Antelope Valley Search and Rescue), and the previous (civilian) owner had misconnected the batteries, mine...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Fuel gauge stopped working, reads all the way to the right (points straight to the passenger side). So, something (ground or sender, or possibly wiring) has gone bad. I don't want to drop the tank, may have to find the wire on it's way there and interrupt it instead (don't want to mess with...

    Glow plug controller card

I paid $70 for the CUCV Electric glow plug controller. Turns out I don't need one, but I think it'll keep it for a spare... or maybe put it in place and keep the stock one as a spare, since the traces on the CUCV electric one are supposed to be 50% thicker and 50% wider than stock (should be...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Changed the ignition and door locks (took about 2 hours, not in a hurry, used GMCPaul's parts), now I don't have to crawl through the ambulance to unlock the doors. Drove it about 5 miles to warm it up, and took it through the drive-thru at Taco Bell... I should be fine at 9 foot...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Ordered a new coolant overflow bottle (bottom mount broken, so you can't fill it without it leaking, but it holds enough to handle expansion), and brake pedal pads (both parking and service brake) from the local GM dealer. Ordered the ignition lock set and door locks (from GMCPAULS), as the...

    PTO on m1028

Welder/Generator and Air Compressor, on the maintenance body trucks.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

That will work fine, except you need to make sure the chassis is not grounded on anything that's powered from the 12V-24V rear battery, or it'll short the 12V front battery to ground. I suppose you could draw 12V just fine for most uses off of the front battery. I'm probably just going to add...

    CUCV Registration Question

Here in California, the previous owner of my 1984 M1010 ambulance had problems with San Francisco bay area DMV (Livermore), and they would only license it as a 1 ton pickup, requiring a weight based registration ($280/year). He had to fight with them to get that, they didn't want to title it at...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Oh, they're not done, as I mentioned, they just sent it all to Sacramento. I expect to at least have to send them a check (or maybe pay online, as they do a lot online now), and possibly have to make a return visit. I wish she'd have processed the title / body changes first, then the amateur...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Went down to CA DMV, transferred title, had them change the body style from PK to MH (a M1010 is more of a motorhome than a pickup, and that's what mine is becoming), and requested my amateur radio call sign plate. Unfortunately, the whole system went into suspense on the amateur radio plate...

    New M1010 owner, Central California

I suppose if you're short enough... It's 65 inches (5 foot 5 inches) inside. I'm 6 foot, so I can't stand up in it, but it's not that big of an issue. :) The inside of the ambulance is 75 inches wide by 109 inches long. A 74" folding RV sofa should work quite nicely on the passenger...
