I bought an M1008 with intensions of putting the 6.2 in my M715.
Being the OCD type, I pulled the heads, checked the bore, flipped it over and pulled the pan and checked the rod and main bearings. All looking good so far so I started looking for a rebuild kit to freshen things up before planting...
Nah, From looking at the main and rod bearings, cam bearings and wear on the std bore cylinders, this engine does not have 100K plus miles.
Everything looked good inside except for the cracks. Heck, it even ran good before I pulled it out.
AHH there is that thingy in the dash, has a needle that sweeps to the right and a little rolling thing just below it, was showing 53456
I think that is what you would call a clue :-)
Well GOOD GRIEF!!!
Pulled down the 6.2 to do a re-fresh job to it. Everything was looking great until I used brake clean to wash the main bearing webs.....
Blew on the metal to evaporate the brake clean and a line appeared that didn't dry. Checked 2 more and the same thing happened there :-(...
I have my '84 CUCV engine apart right now. It was a running engine I WAS going to use to swap into my M715 but......
I found cracks in 3 of the 5 main bearing webs :-(
This is an '84 model and was showing 50K miles! heck it even still has the cross-hatching in the cylinder bores!
Well, I have been splitting my time with another truck.
The Forestry Service auctioned off some of the old CUCV's they had provided to fire departments and I bought an M1008.
I flat towed it home with my Ibis Tek bar at 60 to 65 mph with no issues at all.
Got the thing home and I wanted to...
Side thought, how does one test for hydrocarbons in the coolant?
There is a test unit you can buy at NAPA. With the coolant level down below the filler neck, you place a rubber stopper with a clear cylinder on top of it in the filler neck. There is a special fluid you add to the cylinder and...
When I picked up my M105 and M1102 I had already made a civi to mil plug adapter and just left the 24v bulbs in place. They are a little dim but the brake lights showed up fine for day light operations. Home I came!
Oh, the 105 I drug home with an F150, sure knew it was there at 12 mpg! But the...
So your the one who was bidding against me!!
Hope the truck does great for you.
I ended up with a 1008. Got it home, added batteries and new key tumbler. Started right up and ran till the water made it from the tank to the pump.
Connected it to a fuel can and now the starter has decided to go...
The fluids do mix! I flush older fire truck transmissions and convert them to the Transyn synthetic fluid all the time. I do this because the synthetic fluid change is worth 10 to 20 degrees of operating temp reduction.
Anyway, for Allison to consider the trans fully converted to synthetic, you...
I bought the one with chrome wheels and the utility bed.
I didn't think about the steering wheel lock! Guess I might have to just pull the steering wheel and take the lock plate off OR, knock the drag link loose...
Any suggestions on how to defeat the steering lock?
Other than that, I have an...
Moving forward again. I made a haul to the scrap yard after spending 2 days sorting parts with a good pile and bad pile.
I got into the bed and after sweeping, blowing and vacuuming the debris out of it, I'm thinking it is going to take a new bed assy.
I'll get pic's up this evening.
Anyway...
OK, I just bought a 1008 that is an ex-TX Forest service truck. I am planning on flat towing it home but, I don't know if my tow bar feet will fit the front brackets.
Can one of you tell me the width of the front shackle tubes?
I have medium tow bar feet and am wondering if they are wide enough...
The more I pull off this truck, the less space I have to work in!
I work full time for a local fire department (20 yrs now) and had my own shop doing repair, testing and servicing of fire trucks. When I pulled the plug on my shop, I kept a lot of the equipment. So, I have all the records from 14...
Bcowanwheels, I may take you up on the engine adapter. Let me get a little further down the road with this first. Space is becoming an issue since I only have 1250 sq ft of shop to work in.
Barrman, You have a tailgate?? I'll be needing one of them soon and after I get the bed off to the...
Hi ALL!!
I got a '68 M715 from a local FD but when I got it home, I found a lot more rust than I had expected.
So, It was off to OKC and I got a second truck. The OKC truck was just a frame/ cab/ and axles but in way better shape.
I got the OKC truck apart and sold the axles. then I got...
I'm reaching out on a limb here because I have not worked on one of these yet but, If the compressor systems carried on fire trucks we use an ISO 32 hyd oil for lubricating and cooling the screw compressors. These system also use an Air/ oil separator filter and a hyd oil filter. What fire...
