The reply by Vhyle is the exact reason many people prefer to do the resistor bypass. The stock system works perfectly fine as long as you have 8 good, properly working glow plugs. The problem comes when any one of them stops working.
The resistor drops the 24 volts of both batteries to 12...
My own personal opinion...
Until you pay the extra money to have a "new" one refitted with a diesel governor and shift kit, you'll be money ahead to get a cheap core from CL or a junk yard and find a reputable shop to build it right. My core and rebuild cost about $900 total.
As to the output...
You totally missed what I was saying. The reply before me was misleading with this statement...
The front battery ALWAYS handles the 12 volt loads, whether the resistor is bypassed or not. You are not going to get 12 volts off of the rear battery because of the way they are wired. The only...
He did say a little while ago that he was getting rid of the gay blue gloves...I guess he just switched colors
Don't let us bother you Clint. Rather than spend 20 minutes washing my hands every time I work on something greasy, I use the gloves too. They are cheap and keep...
The 003a tank is 12 gallons. The ASK kit doesn't make a bit of difference as to the tank, they are all the same. The 002a is 8 gallons. Good luck finding one. There were some NOS ones that sold on GL a little while ago for WAY TOO MUCH money (something in the neighborhood of $140 or more...
Very good info, thanks.
I might also add, remove and clean the "spider" looking ground that is beside the e-brake lever in the cab. This is the ground for all of the instrumentation and a good place to start.
Also, inspect the front turn signal sockets. The grounding tab on the side of the...
A word of advice...
I replaced the adjusters on mine after I got it. Even though they came from NAPA the main part of it was still cheap plastic and stripped out as soon as some tension started getting put on it by the springs of the bucket. What I did was bought a few 1/4-28 nuts and put...
Dave,
For the lock-up I used the brake light wiring kit from Bowtie Overdrives. With the kit they give you a new lock-up solenoid and 4th gear pressure switch, along with a new brake light switch (one from a truck with cruise control). The installation was pretty simple. You replace your...
Good point. I'm SURE I could get better mileage if I slowed down to the 55-60 range. But that's the reason I did the swap in the first place, so I wouldn't have to just drive 55-60. Most of my driving is on the highway, and It takes me an hour 20 minutes to get to work doing 70....I don't...
Well, I had a chance to drive the truck a little bit. I drove it to work 2 days this past week. A total of 311.7 miles, I was a little surprised to only get about 13 MPG out of it for the 2 trips. But, I did like the fact that I could make it to work in my normal amount of time...going 70 on...
You can use the short adapter. all you need to do is fabricate a little 3 1/2" riser to bolt between the adapter and the cross member. It's actually a very simple thing to make. I used 3 pieces of 1" key stock and a piece of 1/2" x 1" flat bar to build mine up. Drill and tap two 1/2"-13...
Good job. If the tranny and transfer were good, you might as well save the torque converter as well. While you can get a 1600 stall converter easy enough...you already have one, might as well save it.
Was it worth it?...YES!!!
The truck drives more like a civi vehicle now. It's way easier on the highway now, and much quieter. Personally, I wouldn't waste my time doing it on a 1009, but any of the ones with the 4.56 gearing it is a must have. As was mentioned, the work is not bad to do...
I don't think that R4 cores will dry up any time soon. Pretty much any R4 with a "k" case from a full size 4x4 (probably '90 and older) will work. Unless you happen to find one that was mounted behind a 6.2 from the factory all of them are going to need the mods Recovry4x4 mentioned.
Just geting a "clunk" when you jump the relay sure sounds like something is bound up to me. Can you rotate the flexplate with a screwdriver or something to verify your torque converter/trans isn't binding things up?
Steve, i'm not sure if there is a thread for common parts or not. But, the CUCV's all use the same stock engine and transmissions, and to the best of my knowledge there are only 2 options for the transfer case the NP205 & NP208. The only real differences in them comes in the axles and gear...
