    M1078 Alternator Problem

Eventually, it ate through and shorted a wire. In this case the wire was the "Energize" wire supplying the voltage regulator. The short burned through two other wires as well.

    M1078 Alternator Problem

As the pedal / linkage moved up and down, it started rubbing the wires.

    M1078 Alternator Problem

Here are the pictures for what caused my voltage problem. The engine harness comes up through the driver's side floorboard / foot well and enters the dash compartment just behind the throttle pedal linkage.

    M1078 Air brake help

Frustrating and bought a part I didn't need, but a good learning experience. One thing of importance that I learned is that some of the air brake components can be replaced with other part #'s. Of course that doesn't mean you should just slap anything on your rig and hope it works, but if you...

    M1078 Air brake help

Success! It was indeed the tractor protect valve. Installed new one today. No leak. Pressure holds. Brakes good.

    M1078 Air brake help

So, it does not appear to be either of the dash valves. I switched from the Brake TM troubleshooting to the Air System TM troubleshooting and it does appear to be the tractor protection valve. I was actually able to find one and will install it as soon as it arrives.

    M1078 Alternator Problem

Just fixed a couple hours ago and a heads up to all MTV owners! The problem had nothing to do with the alternator or regulator. There are two wire harnesses that come up from under the cab and enter the dash compartment right next to the throttle control linkage. If the wire loom doesn't come...

    Newbie with some questions

Definitely on the parts. I just noticed last night a lot of stuff I've never seen on eBay; including reasonably priced glass!

    M1078 Air brake help

Good idea. You never know what's taken place before these things get into your hands. I knew a few check valves had been removed and hoped simply replacing them would give me a working system. I now think those checks were removed to use on another vehicle because there was a different system...

    M1078 Air brake help

Yeah, I saw that one the other day. I hated too, but bought it. It's not fair on my part, but I always feel like I should get a deal on eBay; not pay retail or in this case more (Peach State Trucks quoted me $30, but would have to order it). I went ahead and did it because I should have it...

    M1078 Air brake help

Based on what you two have told me, there must be something going on with the trailer supply valve. I am able to get air free flowing on the emergency side, but only with the parking brake off, which may indeed be normal. However, with the parking brake off, the trailer supply engaged, and my...

    M1078 Air brake help

Ok. So as far as the service side goes, that's what we have. However, if you are you saying that with the trailer valve engaged air should flow freely from the emergency side glad hand, that we do not have. Is that what you are saying? If so, maybe the trailer valve is indeed causing our...

    M1078 Air brake help

This is my first air brake truck. So, please excuse my basic questions. Should air be present at the rear glad hands by simply engaging the supply valve or do the brakes need to be applied to get air flow?

    M1078 Air brake help

Thanks for the feedback. No trailer. Could the same thing be happening with one of the rear vehicle chambers. They were both caged when I got the truck and who knows how long it sat like that. Although, they do engage. Maybe I have a problem with dash valve. I'll check that next. I guess...

    Newbie with some questions

True, sort of. But there's more out there than you might think. Remember, part of the MTV program was geared to have commercially available parts to cut down on costs. We bought a unit that was missing quite a bit and although we did get lucky with a couple parts most of the mechanical parts...

    M1078 Air brake help

When I apply the brakes, they all engage. However, I have a soft pedal, air releases out of the bleeder valve on the tractor protect valve, and I lose air pressure fast. I did have to replace both check valves above the drivers front tire. So, I thought maybe I had crossed a line or...

    Newbie with some questions

Also, just for illustrative purposes, I know a guy that shipped two M1078's to Cali for $2500 a piece. Of course, that was two trucks on one trailer. I'm sure one would have cost almost as much.

    Newbie with some questions

Welcome and I echo porksplace's comments. Operating / maintenance depends a lot on you (ability, resourcefulness, etc.), patience when parts are needed, all sprinkled with a little luck. Most of the East Coast LMTV's have been coming out of Atlanta, but there have been some in NY and we should...

Know a good transmission mechanic in the Atlanta area for a M1078 ?

W.W. Williams is the official Atlanta Allison Dealer. They have a location on Moreland near the GL site. They have been helpful to me in the past with M1078's, but I've never actually had to put a truck in their shop. As an actual Allison dealer, I imagine they are not cheap. That said, what...

    LMTV Air Conditioner

I'd just like to know the specs and what compressor and condenser units you used. I'm not up on A/C units. So, I don't know how interchangeable parts are considering pressures, engine rpm, etc.
