Background, I bought a Marine Corp rear axle with a detroit in it. Backing plate got hammered.
So, what's easier?
Removing the Detroited differential to install into another housing with good backing plates
or
Removing and reinstalling a new backing plate
???
Very nice man. We started on ours. Mainly unbolting stuff. How much frame rail did you have to cut? I think I am leaving the tire carrier in (have a hydro tank there, too) and doing dual stacks.
Keep in mind that this was very temporary. Also, we started taking it apart, so bolts are out... they were in when we hauled the trailer out of my back yard.
I guess I need to look at the M939 kit I bought... it's still in the crate in my back yard. Will get to it soon, but will probably need one of your brackets, since I don't know what's in there.
Do you by chance have the Curt part number for that hitch? I can't read it in the pic. With some side plates that go up to the web of the frame, that is about perfect.
We drilled a hole for a 2 and 5/16" goose ball at the very end, where Zebedee is talking, just to get this trailer out of the back yard. This is a very tall trailer, with an adjustable goose neck... no way could we get it near the 5th wheel.
I also had to pull all the valve cores out to...
I certainly get the softer ride and frequently change the shackle angle to do that. I just do it the other way, so the spring's tension can pull it back, instead of locking it up. I'd move your shackle hanger bracket to where it says TP70, clamp it down and flex the snot out of the rear.
I can't tell, did you change your rear shackle angle? If you left it as it was, it will kick up with the spring and not return, I.E it will bind without some sort of "kick back device".
Also, as you drive forward, the shackle wants to move back, with the inertia and in the same direction the...
I plan to do something similar, but with Peterbuilt air ride rear suspension and MRAP front springs... get it a bit lower and riding a bit more comfortable.
I've been thinking about a bob job with 4 wheel steer... I have an extra front kicking around. Hydro would not be that hard, since there are PTO's available for the transmission or the transfer case. Most rock crawlers use bigger power steering pumps to run hydro boost brakes, rear steering...
