When looking at the heater core. The hose closest to the firewall is the shorter of the two and goes to a 90 degree tube that goes into the cylinder head. The hose farthest from the firewall is the longer of the two and goes to the bypass on the water pump (the capped off port you refered to).

Also, if you want to keep it stock 24V (my preference) AB Linn usually has complete remanufactured units ready to drop in for reasonable money.

You never know what they my have done. You can convert a 24V military distributor to a 12V. You can swap out the guts but if they used a conventional 12V coil, it will be too large to fit in the distributer. So there are several holes...

Dave summed it up well above. If you have a typical 1960-70's looking air cleaner on the carb, most likely its 1967. If you have a hood mounted canister air cleaner then most likely its a 1969. 1968 could be either way. Of course there's always exceptions to the rule as I've seen supposively...
