I have also had the bad alternator/solenoid problem. In my case it's been either a bad starter , or a bad solenoid , but never both. If you have a spare solenoid (which is much cheaper than a starter) I'd try that.

Dilvoy is correct. That you can't feel the allen screw head means the bolt head is out of sync with the opening, which is not unusual at all. You need to turn the fan independent of the housing behind it. You can try yanking, since the blades are broken anyway! The TM recommends you put air...
Good point. We'll see. I'll watch it for a while and try to get a feel for how bad it is. Might have always been there since I woke her up from her slumber.

My understanding is that upgrade from 6.2L to 6.5 (turbo or normally aspirated) also involves a different control box and a few other electronic measures. But if I was being gifted one, I'd find a way to use it too!

Latest addition/improvement: LED headlights!
After having one headlamp burn out from letting the hood drop too hard, I decided to look at LED headlights again. Last time, just earlier this year, they were still a bit pricey for my taste. I see that the price is steadily coming down, be it...
dilvoy, interesting about the bolts. I'd never heard of such a thing. I have seen head bolts get annealed, slightly, from heat and lose their ability to hold a good torque, but that was on an old Harley.
Is there a risk tightening the GM bolts in place? I realize it's unlikely to stop the...
Thank you for the replies gentleman. I don't have the luxury of good working conditions to remove and replace heads now that the cold-weather has arrived.
Are there no effective temporary fixes, or can I just leave it to weep?
Bulldogger
I mentioned this in my HMMWV rebuild thread but don't think anyone noticed, so putting it out here.
I've noticed what appears to be a new tiny bit of weeping between the head and block at the front left corner of the motor. Tiny, tiny bubbles when it's running. I don't think it's using up...
Got more work done this long weekend. Removed the mechanical oil gauge, after becoming confident in the accuracy of the new OEM replacements.
Tightened lots of fittings. Notice my valve cover gaskets were leaking, perhaps because the bolts were quite loose.
Also had to tighten scads of...
Pulled the mechanical oil gauge Friday, after gaining confidence in the new electric sensor and gauge. Finished the steering pump RnR yesterday late, was a two day job working off and on. Took a while to clear the air from the lines, but she's steering well now. Have a few more things to deal...
Got the alternator and steering pump off.
Will r and r the pump tomorrow morning and get the reservoir put on the new pump.
Thanks to TheCaptain and AnotherAhab who came and helped.

Well folks, dilvoy wins the award! The bypass hose between the top of the water pump and the bottom of the thermostat housing had a failed hose clamp!!! I discovered it when replacing the hoses as he suggested.
I cleaned the body and dried it, then sprayed the pump body down w talc based...
Color matching, finally!
At the risk of disappointing AnotherAhab, I painted my tan soft doors to better match the rest of the vehicle. It is the Rapco CARC substitute spray paint. Took a lot to cover up the tan. Had to order more and wait to do the last door!

It doesn't seem to be the hoses but that is a cheap and easy thing to try. I'd meant to replace them anyway. I already did the larger coolant hoses.
Ill try that and report back later this week.
If it doesn't work, my weekend has planned itself, I guess.

Thanks for the comments gents. I took some pictures in case they help. The wetness is around roughly the top half of the pump. I can't see anything much down below the shaft. Couldn't spot the weep hole.
It is starting to sound like an RandR.

Now a leaking water pump gasket?
I'm starting to lose coolant and now seeing a seepage puddle beneath the HMMWV that's just come to be in the past two weeks. Based on wetness on the engine block, it looks like the gasket between my water pump and the adapter plate is leaking.
Is this common...
I rode that ten years ago on my shovelhead going out to visit relatives south of Chincoteague. The bumps of the bridge weren't too bad but it was 30mph crosswinds the whole way back and I HAD to be at work on Monday and dog sitter was leaving Sunday day afternoon. It took 8 hours to do what is...
Installed new oil pressure gauge and sending unit, courtesy of Erik. Working well. Still have the mechanical gauge plumbed. Will run it a few more days before going back to stock. So far so good. Bulldogger
Well gents. The problem seems much more clear now. I plumbed a manual pressure gauge and did some driving. Took a little more time as I gathered fittings so's I could have both the factory electric gauge and new manual gauge connected at once.
After some highway driving, the dash gauge would...
