    Wheel hop at 45 mph

Well I never even considered that a stock wheel would hit the tube. Good catch, my bad. Would it be possible to use thin spacers on the lug bolts to clear the head of the rivets?

    Wheel hop at 45 mph

Another way to balance the whole wheel assembly, including hubs, wheels, tires, lug nuts, valve stems, tubes and boots, is to install Balance Masters behind each wheel. This is what the 18-wheelers use on over-the-road trucks. When I decided to run 11.00/20NDT on my M1028, I knew I was going...

m1028,14 bolt disc brake conversion w/ el dorado calipers

I agree with 1ton - make sure you get the calipers for a 1978 ElDorado.

m1028,14 bolt disc brake conversion w/ el dorado calipers

I used the ElDorado calipers on my rear disc brake conversion http://www.steelsoldiers.com/cucv/52121-rear-disc-brakes.html Everything worked great and fit perfectly. The emergency brakes work well and hold without slipping. I would not advise using other calipers without the E-brake...

    M1008, a whole new dog

Although I haven't yet attempted to get there, the calculated top speed of my M1028 with 11.00/20 NDT is around 115 MPH. Currently turning around 1900 RPM at 55 MPH with surprising power. Going down a long hill I actually have to get on the brakes.

ord crossover steering and hydraulic assist?do i need one or the other

I'm running 11.00/20 NDT with ORD's cross-over without hydraulic steering. However I don't plan to do any serious off-roading. If I did, I would definitely install hydraulic steering and the steering brace. Heck my truck will probably never leave the asphalt! I posted a couple of photos of...

    Diy rock sliders

Thanks Darren. Looking forward to getting mine!

    Finishing up my M1028

usmc80 - the seats are factory with new cushioning and black seat covers from LMC. All sheet metal is original, with the exception of the hood, which is NOS. Please review my rebuild thread. The tailgate is original. KF4ACN - What the **** is a tier?

    Finishing up my M1028

mikeV - I built those rims in 1985 and ran the same tire/wheel setup on a civi K30 4WD SRW for 10 years. When I decided to build my M1028, I planned to use the same tire/wheel. The tires are 44" tall and there is hardly any rolling resistance. 1900 RPM @ 50 MPH with surprising power. I run...

    Finishing up my M1028

I am now in the final stages of my M1028 rebuild. Been working on it off-and-on since June 2010. Still need to rebuild the injector pump, re-pack front hubs, and install a new harmonic balancer.

    Diy rock sliders

OK guys, I am sold. Gotta have a set. Who do I pay and where do I send the cash?

    Steering and Front Axle Rebuild.

Iceman - IMHO it would surprise me if your rear springs are wearing out. They may settle a bit over time if heavily loaded, however the M1008's were never meant to haul heavy loads such as a contact maintenance box. Just my 2 cents worth. I installed Ord's shackle flip kit and Zero Rates in...

    M1009 and locakable gas caps

It is a simple fix. Purchase a new or used civi diesel fuel neck and replace the military one. I did this during my M1028 rebuild. You can see a write-up in post #52 in my rebuild thread. http://www.steelsoldiers.com/cucv/54469-kinda-got-carried-away.html

What do your neighbors and other drivers think of your CUCV

I don't get my M1028 out too much because I am still working on it. Last fall I made a test run out to my farm and my neighbor stopped by to look at it. He called it a DOOMSDAY TRUCK!

    Rim and tire set up

Reply to Richingalveston - My tire/wheel setup consists of 11.00/20 NDT mounted on custom fabricated 20" Firestone split rims. They are 44" tall. In addition to a 5" lift, I also had to trim the front fenders substantially to facilitate clearance. I also had to move the front axle 1"...

    Rim and tire set up

bshupe - The connecting arm that comes up from the axle needs to be approximately 90 degrees to the short arm that connects to the proportioning valve. But what is more important is the radial position of the valve after the arm is connected. After you get the longer arm fabricated and...

    Rim and tire set up

As a follow-up to my previous post - I installed rear disc brakes as part of my rebuild, and can attest that there are no issues regarding fluid capacity or braking capacity to the rear wheels. My truck will stop on a dime going forward or backward. And unlike the factory rear drums, there...

    Rim and tire set up

I recommend against eliminating the rear brake proportioning valve. It is designed to increase braking power to the rear wheels when a load is added to the bed. For instance, if you were to load 3000 pounds of gravel in the bed, you want the rear brakes to deploy first and strongest. As a...

Great project Bill. I am looking forward to seeing it in person.
