Lots of places to get 24V commercial power - boating supplies, solar/off grid suppliers, truck supplies, amateur radio supplies. I would recommend some kind of battery and a 24V battery charger. This will handle any surges better. You are looking for watts (and ohms). Ohms don't factor in to...
Inside setup. Yaesu FT-897 next to the drivers seat. Jensen JMS2212 control head, electronics are in the console. 897 out to aux in port in the console.
Thought about the same thing yesterday. Do I let my new licensed learners permit son drive (with me) in the M1009, the Silverado 2500HD crew cab with 8 foot bed, or the Trailblazer? He has driven the Silverado off highway before (we have a farm) and can handle a Bobcat Toolcat really well. It...
The antenna is a dual band J-Pole. I bought a pre-made unit from Edison Fong which he makes based on his update of the design http://harriscountyares.org/training/KNW/KNW-109.pdf He is a professor at UC Santa Cruze (The Slugs) and the antennas are build by his wireless communications graduate...
Exams are given by Volunteer Examination Coordinators. Most radio clubs sponsor it. If you use a Laurel VEC group Laurel VEC there is no fee. If you use the ARRL VEC group there is a fee (small). QRZ.com has good on-line sample tests (it is a fixed question pool and you randomly get a % of...

Good idea. The IP, starter, and alternator may be things I want to "stock" at home. Now if I box them and label them in the garage, the better half or a friend could possibly overnight them to me almost anywhere in the lower 48. It would save cobbling some junk to get it home.
I have an Emcom radio box for some of what I do. I was described in QST over 10 years ago. It is a toolbox fitted with a radio (Kenwood TM-V7 in my case), a small gel battery, and a 1 amp trickle charger. That gives you about 50 watts transmit at 25% duty cycle. We use it every year for a week...
Got an AB-558 base and 3 MS-116, 1 MS117, and 1 MS-118 sections to make a 15' whip. Got it mounted in a rear radio mount (needs some tan paint). Still have to run the antenna feed and run it on the MFJ analyzer. Got it from Fair Radio Sales fairradio.com for a fair price. I also have two...
Vehicles registered as "historic" in Maryland are exempt from inspection. Not that mine would not pass, but they may abject to the antenna mount "someone could get hurt".
Around the DC Beltway, which is basically flat, but not as flat as Vegas, I get 22MPG at 55-65 and 20MPG at 60-70 (50 mile one way trip). By comparison, my 2005 Silverado 2500HD Diesel gets 17-18 on the same route while my 2008 Trailblazer (gas) V8 gets 18-19. Your not going to break any 0-60...
