I don't get it wrong. My rear L bracket was bend, because it "catches the edge".
My thought was the skidplate slide over the ground.
The best option IMO ist to remove the batteries and toolbox and use steptanks.
But i wan't go this way. I like the stock look, the easy access to the tanks and...

Grade 8 bolts&nuts, thick washers, plate made of S700MC 1.8974 (ASTM A514 ?)

I have thought about your suggestions and you're right. Thicker would be nicer. So i decided to glue (with a polymer adhesive) a second plate on the back. Much better :)
i would attach the seal to the box with an angle iron frame with some magnets so it comes off without damaging the seal.
I know that EPDM pool liner also works....
12mpg with a deuce? I'm in doubt about it. With the bed only i get about 10.7 to 9.8mpg. With the shelter it drops to 8.4mpg or less.... for my honest opinion you should try to get an old moving van - truck.
They are closer to what you need , more comfortable , easier to maintain and repair...
Why not buy an old camper, part it out and built your own box? in exactly the dimensions you want?
