The reason I'm interested is I want to build one with a single rear axle and a standard flatbed on the back. Not interested in an M105 bed by any stretch. I want to use a fifth wheel from draw tite (civvy pickup version) that I can interchange with a gooseneck ball so I can haul my fifth wheel...
Could you use 5 ton front springs for the rear? How hard would it be to mount some kind of air ride off of a Peterbuilt (or any other semi manufacturer)? I've driven alot of semi's but not worked on many to know the interchangeability.
Bringing this back to the forefront, has anyone since 2006 done a 5 ton bob with duals? I'm curious of the advantages/ disadvantages of singles vs. duals.
RE: Have a 5ht wheel available
Don't worry crane, I have an incredible amount of ingenuity. Call it a knack for getting things done that I shouldn't have been able to. We call it Hillbilly Engineering.
Hey pa.rich, citizensoldier has a 5 ton dump that needs motor work. Might make you a good deal on it. I definitely might be interested in parts. I'll wait till I pick up the project truck before I start accumulating parts. I don't think it will be too hard to mount the fifth wheel. Set, align...
I welcome all comments. Another thing I thought about was mounting a sliding fifth wheel to accomodate differant trailers and weights. What do y'all think?
Good info guys. What about a Tractor Protection Valve? What about towing capacity? I'm drawing a blank on the trolley brake. What is it and what does it do? So these trucks were designed to have air brake equipped trailers? What wheelbase truck should I look for? I want to try and stay away from...
Thanks for the info poppop. How would you work the brakes on the converted deuce? I think (lol newbie) they are air over hydraulic. Would I need to mount a compressor and plumb some lines or would I have to fab up a whole new braking system? Also, I assume the 5 tons are full air brakes so those...
LOL, no doubt. It'd work out better if we both found good priced running driving trucks. Do a driver swap halfway. Send me any links or pics of tractors you find. For the right deal, I might be able to finaggle a tractor/ trailer from the neighbor.
As some of you know I'm looking for a 5 ton tractor. I seem to find dumps more regularly than I do tractors so here's what I'm wondering. If I found a dump with the same wheelbase as a tractor, what would be involved in converting it to a tractor? Also, will a 5 ton tractor be able to haul...
I don't have a truck to look at here, but I was wondering the same thing as squirttruck. Is there not enough room between the radiator and engine? Seems like if the stock fan is that big and cumbersome you'd have some real room to work with.
