Boy, that qoute of me came out wrong. Can't make out what it was I said in my last post. :-D
Anyhow, if he is not running commercial he will not need annual DOT inspections. If he did run commercially he could get an inspection to re-rate the truck. This is done a lot when converting antigue...
Will the engine do 2500 to 2600 rpm in first or second gear but not fifth? Or will it only do 2300 rpm in all gears? If it will do a higher rpm in low gear but not in fifth then you have a problem. If it will only do 2300 rpm in all gears then it sounds like the govenor needs to be adjusted...
Is this thread in regards to Cummins or multi-fuel engines? The OP has M54A2 in his user name and since he didn't specify what the engine was I could only guess it was for a multi-fuel, not a Cummins.

One idea that came to mind this morning was how to solve the issue about tandem axles if you want to be able to cross state lines as you please. A single rear axle from a 5 ton has about the same load capacity as both rear axles combined on a deuce and a half. So if you really want to use a...
That was one thing that was interesting with Virginia. If you were not for hire (i.e. not in commerce) you could drive anything, regardless of weight. But if you helped pull a friend out of a ditch as soon as that friend gave you a buck for fuel you were commercial. As long as you don't accept...
My wife was stationed in Virginia from 2002 to 2006 and while we were there I researched VA CDL requirements for a private use semi truck and trailer. What I found out was at the time VA state law said to reference federal guidelines for the rules. But this was several years ago. You might want...
As wsucougarx mentioned you can not get them right from the base but there are a couple of other alternative sources (other then private sales). They show up in GSA auctions every now and then. Plus check with your state agencies for military surplus. In Alaska a lot of the trucks from DRMO...
How about using a tranny from a gasser with the larger tires? It has a lower first gear and fifth gear is 1:1 (i.e. no overdrive). You won't gain any additional top speed with the larger tires but you also won't have any lose of power down low either.

Your best bet would be to take half an hour to make some calls. I find Google to be a very easy way to find phone numbers for Port Of Entries. Because a 5 ton 6x6 has tandem rear axles it puts it right in to IFTA and IRP territory, regardless of the vehicles GVWR or registered weight, as soon as...
Got the latest shipment from Sprue Brothers the other day. In it was the HobbyBoss M706/V100 kit that I wanted to steal the rims from to use with the tires from the M1078 LMTV kit. When I took a closer look at the M706 rims I didn't like the shape of the holes in the rim. Plus the center section...
The other way of thinking when it comes to changing a deuce to full air is that when you start losing air pressure the low pressure buzzer will warn you ahead of time so you can pull over in time. With a hydraulic system when you lose enough fluid you've lost your brakes too. Plus if you spend a...
It's not the Feds, it's the state level government doing it. When I was in Alaska I looked in to getting a 5 ton tractor from DRMO for a non-profit I was with. Was told they no longer dealt with the public directly and that non-profits would have to go to a state agency and the state would act...

Is it in Punta Gorda or Ft Myers? I've seen it on Craigslist for Ft Myers. Would love to grab it but the only way I could afford it right now is if the guy would let me pay in 10 monthly payments.
Are you going the the Florida get together next month?
Ruppster
Well, did you get them?
I was watching the 3/4 ton and 1.5 ton trailers at Jacksonville. Many of them went pretty cheap. Wished I had the money to bid on the wrecked M929A1. That went really cheap.

All you need is a pair of mechanic's ramps. Problem solved. :-D

One of these days I need to drive out your way to see your collection. Was watching your youtube vids about the wrecker last night. I really need to...
I take it the trailer has dual chamber air cans on at least one of the axles? Have you had someone pull the brake release valve while you watch the arms on the brake chambers for movement? If you have movement of the arms but the shoes don't release then they are rusted to the drum. With the...
Guess I should have clicked on the payment link in the first place. I tried it a little bit ago and found out it has a one day visit payment option. Sent $10 for Saturday.
Is this what you are looking for?
