re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Does your generator have an ASK? I believe every one I have seen with ASK has both 400hz and 60hz labels on it. And, PeterD caught something that I missed. 277/480 is a voltage that the MEP's are not capable of...wonder why yours has that label on it? That is still a wye voltage, so not...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

The MEP-004 is either 60hz OR 400hz; your machine cannot be both. Unfortunately, the frequency is determined by the internal workings of the generator head itself and CANNOT be changed without completely swapping out the generator head. Based on the fact that your frequency meter is a 400hz...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

What you have is normal; the removable board you are holding in your hand is re-used without modification. The bus bar on the stationary board is the one you cut...many methods can be used! The dremel seems to be the most popular, but any way you can get the bar cut and re-attached without...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

It sounds like the voltage reconnection board was removed and individual bars were bolted in its place. Actually not a problem for the single phase conversion. A picture would be very helpful :carnac:

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

I did one instructor tour at MARF as well; met my wife in Saratoga Springs. I was there in 1997-2001. You?

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

HHO should be OK in your set; I have run all sorts of crap though my personal MEP's (including centrifuged waste motor oil) with no problems. Somebody might correct me here...but theoretical maximum draft is determined by the density of the fluid you are lifting, the efficiency of the pump, and...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Nuke. I was shimmin' control rods and shiftin' coolant pumps on the USS Buffalo and USS John C Stennis. You? That A/C unit is going to eat up quite a bit of the generator's capacity. Without knowing the specific amp draws of everything, my gut feeling is that the -004 will run everything...

Yep...probably best to start a new topic...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

This is almost certainly a fuel problem... Normal things to check (even if you do see some fuel available at the IP): 1. Leaks in the fuel supply line (including in the fuel filters) 2. Fuel level in the day tank (includes operation of the lift pumps, solenoid valve, and float switch) 3...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Are you getting any warning lights/alarms with the shutdown?

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Well, if it produced power before the conversion, and it doesn't now...I have to conclude that it was something that happened when you did the conversion. If I was in your shoes, I would move all of the leads back to their original locations and move the heavy jumper to take the place of the...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Did it produce power before you did the conversion? If the freq. meter only goes up to 50hz while you have the start switch in start, then you likely are running the generator at too low of an RPM. Try speeding it up a bit, and then re-flash the field (place the start switch in start with...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Did it work fine before you did the single phase conversion? Does the generator continue to run after you start it, or does it shut down? Any warning lights that can't be reset? Do any of the meters read anything on any of the positions on the switch?

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

This is good advice; I think your current numbers are a little high though (unless you were showing numbers right before overload trip, or taking power factor into consideration). IMO, most residences have a PF closer to 1, so a 15kw set will only provide about 125A (at 120v) or 63A (at 240v)...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Glad you got it working properly! That's a nice looking set you have; should be a good reliable backup generator for you for years.

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

You're probably fine with the load you have on it to prevent wet stacking; Ithink that the -005a is the perfect gen for your setup! It will handle some larger surges easily too; if you need to start an big electric motors on top of all of that load it won't complain about it. I bought my...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

The basic way the circuit works is that the thermal watt converter (black box inside the control cubicle) takes an input from the current transformer and drives the gauges; if the ammeter and the wattmeter both are not working, then the gauges themselves are likely not the problem (although this...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

Not sure why you are getting zero voltage across L1-L3; especially since your installed voltmeter reads 240 when selected to that position. If that set was in my shop, I would clamp my oscilloscope across the 2 phases and make sure they were 180 degrees out of phase... I placed 3 resistors...

re-wiring my MEP-004a for different voltages, including single phase

-002 and -003 are selectable between single and 3 phase with one switch; its a pretty neat feature! It isn't an efficiency issue; it is the limit of how much current each individual winding can carry. When pulling single phase off of a wye (3 phase) configured machine, you are pulling more...
