Well, working on lowering the 2nd trailer. I am moving the axle forward 1/2" too, to help with shock length, but it turns out this trailer has shocks that compress completely, so it probably wouldn't have been a problem anyway. Perhaps I'll swap shocks between the two. (Both are 2009...
Easy there. Check your post. You said back off 20%. That's a lot different than 20 degrees. (20% means if you tightened it to 100 ftlbs, you loosened it to 80ftlbs, which is still wrong...)
While 20 degrees might be ok, it also might not... What we're all after is no preload, and that's...
I normally agree, but in this case, the TM needs a little clarification. If you tighten the bearings to 100ftlbs and then only back off until the cotter fits, or just install the cotter, you're running the bearings with a LOT of preload. Probably in the realm of as much overall load as they...
Hmm. Here it is, right from the TM:
While turning the hub/drum slowly, tighten the spindle nut (3) to seat bearings.
Back off the spindle nut as required to align the cotter pin hole.
Install a cotter pin (2) and bend ends to secure the spindle nut (3).
I guess it's completely open to...
Thanks! I forgot to mention that I had noticed both hubs on this trailer run warm. There seemed to be a lot of drag on both that wasn't the brakes. Popped the caps to find that the bearings were cranked right tight. Probably torqued to around 50ftlb. I loosened both sides and then did my...
Greetings! I'm going to use these trailers as a base for brush fire units, and using a 12" riser for the hitch just isn't a great option.
Of course the first thing I did was to pull the runflat 37's and toss on some 285's. That brought the hitch down 2" or so, but it's still too high. In...
That works if you have access to a patient forklift operator and chains and slings at the GL lot, and when you get it where you're going to unload them. I wasn't that ambitious when I picked mine up, so I stacked them upright like this:
Let the air out of the tires on the trailer that you're...
I picked up a few trailers back in August at Ft Bliss. I took off the military tires and wheels and sold them and installed some 285's on gm aluminum wheels. In doing so, I pulled off the stabilizer legs to install them on the rear and use the tongue jack to lift the trailers off their tires...
Have you noticed a problem backing up? I'm not familiar with the brakes on the 416A1, but generally, trailer brakes work poorly at best in reverse, so it isn't as much of an issue. If the 416A1 has a pin that you install to back up, then that definitely wouldn't be the case, and you may...
Well, on a pickup they proved it's actually worse with the tailgate down... Or on that particular pickup anyway... I thought it might make a difference on the trailer, since it was tail high up in the wind. Still pushing the front, so I doubt it made any difference at all.
And up until...
I picked up an M1101 Monday and it also had one hub bearing nut that was too tight for my taste, causing that bearing to run warm. Wasn't running warm enough to worry me, and it made the trip fine, but it had been tightened about half a flat past where I could hand tighten it to. I always run...
It worked!
The deed is done and my two M1101 trailers are sitting at the shop waiting to be un-stacked. I arrived at Ft Bliss at 9:30AM Monday. GL guy didn't return any of my calls Monday morning, so after 1.5 hours of driving around looking for the lot and waiting for him to call...
Well, I was hoping to score a 24' flatbed gooseneck before the week was over, but it isn't meant to be... I'm heading down sunday. Talked to Mr. Lowe at Ft Bliss and he says they have a forklift and will use it to stack my trailers for me. I'm going to stack them right side up instead of...
FYI, the 101 series and 1101/2 series trailers use a 3" lunette, while most of the smaller commercial pintles are designed for a 2-1/2" lunette ring. The only drawback when doing this is that the 3" ring will occasionally bind in the smaller pintle if you're turning sharply and backing...
Wonder if their being so tall is part of the problem. Wonder if the GL guys will flip one upside down on top of the other for me... Wonder if i can find a longer trailer to rent locally to haul them both back on...
So many questions... :)
Crap. Having the cover on the front trailer might not have helped at hwy speeds... I assume the front trailer was banging the crap out of the hitch?? Was it really windy? I figured 55-60mph tops anyway...
Thinking about this a little more, it must be the tongue weight from the back...
Thanks m16ty. I tow doubles all the time, but usually it's a gooseneck towing my Jeep, or the Jeep on a tow bar with the motorcycle trailer hooked on back. I'll be sure to add some weight to the first trailer if I go that route. Looks like I did get two trailers. Dang it, the most...
Thanks guys! This sounds like it will be just the ticket!! Looks like you have some good google sketchup skills Zebedee!! :)
If I put in a cross tube with a reciever on it, it WOULD work well for shuttling! Hmmm... (Double towing is legal out here in the wild wild west, or "wasteland" if...
