Looked up invoice for plugs, October 2005, Champion CHP 517 @ $13.01 each. Not sure if number is the store's stock # or Champion's. If you can get hold of a Champion catalog and look up the shielded plugs in the back, there are a number of different heat ranges available. We used a hotter...
Looks just like a bigger version of a Mopar slant six filter base!
As a side note, the Mack engine in the new 5 ton tractor uses the same filter element as the multi, but only one. In the base, at the oil port from the pump, is a spring loaded one-way valve that keeps the filter can mostly...
Gasket must be broken in one place, as it runs out good when driving. Oil it Sam's club 85-90 and about 0.5" down from fill hole. Looks like leak has ben ongoing for a while.
Can the top of the 5 ton transmission (part with all the shift rails and forks) be removed while the trans is still in the truck? The new tractor has a bad leak on the back at the top to case joint and it would be great if the top could come off while in the truck so I could cleanup and use RTV...
OSO, thanks, but the left coast is a little too far for a quick trip, and the freight costs on 6-10 rims would be more than the cost of the rims! Hope I answered your stud question in the 5 ton forum.
From looking at the parts blowup in Memphis' book, I would guess that the unit has an internal leak between the hydraulic cylinder and the gear box. The gear box is filled with gear oil and the cylinder and control valve is pressurized by the steering pump.
Same problem we were having with our truck. Make sure all air lines and valves are tight and not leaking air. I flushed out the case with a mixture of fuel oil, ATF and motor oil. As DDoyle said, bad things can happen quick and you will be installing a new transfer case.
Ours does not do...
When we were first working on the water truck, the temp gage won't read at all, after idling for over an hour with the rad covered with cardboard. Finally took the t-stat housing apart, and no thermostats at all!! Ordered and installed the standard units (160 degree) and now the temp gage was...
Was this truck a converted gasser? The reason I ask is the de-gasser cable on the photos of the dash. What year is truck, if you know?
I agree, the new style steering is a lot nicer on the driver than the old. Our H2O truck has the old style, and it seems to fight you a little at low speeds...
Your story about the loose baffles reminded me of the old Michigan loader my old employer had. It used a 4-71 GMC (Jimmy) engine and would go through mufflers in no time. Our old mechanic got sick of changing them out so he just welded up a hollow shell out of old pipe and 1/4" plate and...
Have an ad in the "want" classifieds for at least 6 of the combat style rims (10" wide, 10 hole). Anyone have the off-set dimensions for these? Also, I can use the older style rims that used tubes if anyone has these. Want to take the spacers off the front of the water truck and run 1400...
For the cost of a pan gasket, I would strongly suggest that you pull the pan down and remove #6 rod bearing for inspection. I have experienced a number of rod bearing failures, and it almost always causes some amount of damage to the crank by the time you catch it (this in gas motors). Are the...
