    Air-O-Matic help

Chris, has anyone documented taking this apart? I found some older threads but the links go dead. I'll keep looking as I need the details for mine. But I'm researching to see if a pilot controlled valve and accumulator might be a better alternative. That requires making the link valve into a...

    Air O Matic steering

Okay, a brief look over and I have an 'alternative' idea. I see the valve that controls the air in the drag link as the heart of this system. That "link" has mechanical stops (inside) to give the part full strength by the arm-strong method (as if no compressed air is present). Inside, it is...

    Air O Matic steering

I've seen a lot of posts on rebuilding and seals but has there been discussion of custom making new components for add on to the A2 or A1 or replacement parts on A3 ? They do seem to be in short supply. I have not been into mine yet, so need educated in the operation and any good improvements.

5 ton vs 2.5 frame differences?

If you plan on doing any welding on the frame, use a deuce frame. It's 8x3x1/4". The 5 tons are high tensile strength and should not be welded...also harder to drill. The 5 ton is a lot stronger, however.

    M818 as a first truck - opinions

How about the neighbors? Sometimes in tight neighborhoods people make anonymous calls to the zoning and such. Do you have plenty of room to locate it so others don't get upset at your new hobby? Distance usually makes the size less of an issue. Do you have a covered home for it...green iron...

TornagdGT's M931A2 "Miss Ava Lynn" Mods and Repairs

Yea, I see. It does look nice but it sure makes a lot of work doing it, removing the spare, exhaust and tool box. and then having to re-locate them. I'd keep those things where they are and have a couple feet shorter bed. Now if you were making a dump, I could see getting the extra space...

    M818 as a first truck - opinions

You don't say what you would use the truck for. The shorter length of the 818 gives it a bit more maneuverability, but it's still a large truck. Myself...I would like a 4x4 that starts as an 818. One of the nice things especially for towing is the manual trailer air control. But if you...

TornagdGT's M931A2 "Miss Ava Lynn" Mods and Repairs

I think an uncut M35 bed is too long for a 931, unless you are making a camper and want the floor space. That's about 2' longer than my dump truck (which is the short frame too).

TornagdGT's M931A2 "Miss Ava Lynn" Mods and Repairs

Seano11, are you talking about using an 1101 or an M105 bed? Do you plan on leaving the 931 frame full length? Either way, the axle location will need centered on the wheel well and the back of the bed positioned with a small overhang (rear). On a 5 ton, I would leave the spare tire carrier...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

The problem with bondo is that it has no strength on it's own. It's good with fiberglass to make the contours but you have to get some strength over the holes. Glass cloth is readily available but so is canvas for a base that will adhere to the surrounding (rust treated/primed) metal...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

JB Weld or epoxy and some strips of canvas (or glass cloth) might work.

    value of a canvas for a m1101

The only reason I said that high is because the 1101 and 1102 are such popular trailers and it appears complete. Photo is rather blurry. MaineOR....there have been a few scammers so be prepared to share verifiable personal information (in PM) to a SS buyer.

    value of a canvas for a m1101

Some people come here to get a premium for their items, others pass on deals and they move rather quickly. I'd ask $600 + shipping, which would be a lot with you in Maine. But like Porky says....the price of a membership is cheap and it supports this site, so list it at whatever price you...

    M35A3 Transmission type?

Here is one vendor of high performance clutch pack and piston (need a caged spring set too). Direct clutch of 4L80 = fourth/reverse of AT-1545. I'm sure there are others. Disclaimer..... While this is what I plan on doing on the next rebuild, I have not done it yet...

    O/D VS Non O/D

This thread says the gut of one will go to the guts of the other. www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?28845-transmissions "PTO will bolt up fine. For off road it would be nice, the gears are spaced better without the overdrive. Same transmission, different gearsets, will interchange." And...

    O/D VS Non O/D

Take a look at this thread to start on https://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?56075-M-35-5-speed-spicer-3053a-swap-to-5-ton-s Isn't the swap a 3052 for the 3053, or are you intending to use the 5 ton tranny in the deuce?

    O/D VS Non O/D

My friend Matt knows the Allison well. We have rebuilt 2 of the 1545's. Seems there is a really weak point in the tranny's fourth/reverse clutch pack and having the locking torque converter makes that problem worse. The GM 4L80 has many high performance parts (clutch's and pistons) with...

    O/D VS Non O/D

Hi andy...that's a good question. Your post caught my attention because the Allison in my M35A3 is 1/1 and I wish I had the OD. I'm thinking about axle gears 4.90. It sure would seem like the older non-OD should fit. How about an Allison 545? Post up what you find. Edit....if you find...

    M35A3 Transmission type?

I'm happy to report that Joe (Scar 59)'s Allison 1545 is rebuilt and ready for service by my friend Matt. Matt has not had it since 2017, when Joe was having problems in this thread, however. I'm bringing it up to share what Rusty and Matt have helped me to locate parts that are used in...
