wet stacking or idling my Mep-003a

A while back there was a post about the transistors in the VR. I meant to pick one up to have on hand as cheap insurance but never got around to it. If anyone have a part number for the transistor, I probably ought to pick one up. Thanks, John

    new toy

And I thought your gasket cutting printer was cool. 3-D printers still blow my mind. I know when I first started hearing about them, they were crazy expensive but I hear people saying the prices are coming down. Where are they starting at now? And if you get bored ,a video of it making a...

Horse power rating of MEP-002A and MEP-003A engines?

This happens to me all the time. It can get really annoying at times. Here is a snapshot of the Operator and Organizational Maintenance Manual (-12) where the 003 hp rating is listed

    Another MEP-003a AutoStart with PLC

I would love to add a PLC just because it would be a cool project. But there is a certain allure to the foreplay of the manual method that I really enjoy: Give her a prime until she starts slow ticking, a nice long preheat and finally, blowing some smoke out of my pipe. It's kinda weird, I...

Bad Military Surplus Generator Advice Online

I know what you mean. On a RV forum I frequent, a constant recommendation is to only buy inverter generators, as they produce "clean" power for all your electronic devices. This drives me nuts. For one thing, most modern electronics (including the computer I am typing on the the monitor I am...

    Mep-003

SO cord counts the ground wire as a conductor. So 4/x SO cord would consist of these four wires: black, red, white and green.

I can't help but wonder how you got 380psi with the rings leaking that bad... John

    mep-003a teardown and refurb

That's great Jim. I load tested mine when I first got it on a 15kw, 3 phase, 208 heater. I seem to remember the meter being around 120%. It was making a little light grey smoke at that load, but I thought at the time that was to be expected. You say it made "pretty much no smoke". I...

    002a excessive blow-by

If the rings were stuck, would you see compression at 380 and 385? Spec is between 350-450, so you're right where you should be. Have you completely drained the oil and then refilled to spec to see if that makes any difference? Of course I like your idea of pouring some lacquer thinner into...

    002a excessive blow-by

I think I would pull the pan and take a look at the bottom end of the motor. I suppose you could have a busted connecting rod that is really splashing up the oil. That could also limit your RPM's if you were limping thru a cylinder cycle. Is it smoking? John

    surplus center distribution panel project

In simplest terms, the NEC prohibits the ground wire from being used as a current carrying conductor. When it is bonded to the neutral at the receptacle, it becomes one (in parallel) with the neutral, carrying current back to the generator. John

    surplus center distribution panel project

Since the neutral can carry voltage, you don;t want them bonded anywhere except the first point of service, in this case the generator. Otherwise you will create a condition in which your ground conductor could carry transient voltage and under the right circumstances, a number of bad things...

    MEP002/MEP003 Hours

I don't doubt for a minute the these units can make those hours but from what I have seen, many of they will require quite a bit for work after about a thousand hours. Mainly from neglect, rust/corrosion and UV (gummed/rusted/stuck fuel tanks, pumps, lines and IP, corroded controls and worn our...

MEP002A- Hertz meter stuck on 64

I don't say this to be funny but I know I would give the meter a few good whacks with the side of my fist. Of course, I learned this from my old man, who could fix our tv almost every time with this method. John

MEP002A With low frequency meter reading

I think 102 hertz derived from 3060 RPM would make you wanna run for cover. I hope he is seeing pf.

    surplus center distribution panel project

Jim, that looks nice. A couple observations though...it looks like the ground and neutral are bonded on the receptacle on the right. If they are, they shouldn't be. I would however, run a ground wire and bond to the metal box and the so cord ground. John

    MEP-002A hookup through subpanel

At my day job, I have installed several generator/ups sets which always require maintenance bypass breakers as part of the installation. These are larger (300kva and up) sets. They typically utilize a key interlock for the bypass breakers. Search for "Kirk Key" and you should be able to find...
