    Common ignition switch problem?

I had to replace mine for the same problem. It got so tough my wife could not turn the switch. Not a bad job as suggested by another member. You really need and bolt puller to get the steering wheel off IIRC.

    Brake Proportioning Valve

Based on all of the input from this thread I have decided to keep the valve and repair the arm in the same manner as sharecropper did. Thanks for the input and suggestions from everyone and the pics from sharecropper.

1008 steering kingpin tension spring help!

I am doing the exact same repair. My cap and steering arm came off real easy, guess I was lucky. The biggest challenge was laying on a creeper and driving the races back in the bottom side. Before I did my repair my knuckles would move back and forth with little effort. Now they are very...

Death wobble + Doghead relay mod

I have all the TM's saved to a flash drive, I carry them with me along with a laptop most times. If I am working on a project I will sometimes print the TM's for a reference. They are something you can not do without if you are going to have one of these trucks. Pirate 4x4 web site also has...

    Brake Proportioning Valve

Sharecropper, your explanation was very good and easy to understand. I just have made my mind up to remove the valve, install rear disc brakes and go from there. If the pressure is to high and I start locking up the rear end to soon I will install an adjustable valve inline. Thanks for the...

    Brake Proportioning Valve

I want to get rid of it for a few reasons. First the truck is lifted so the control rod or lever is not hooked up. The other reason is I am planning on doing a disc brake conversion to the rear brakes. Thanks for all the help. For some reason I was under the impression that a brass block would...

    Brake Proportioning Valve

I have done a lot of searching on this subject and so far have discovered that several members have removed their brake proportioning valve. My question and what I can not find the answer to is what they replaced them with. I live 80 miles from my dads shop where my M1008 is currently at...

Poll - Who has done the Doghead Relay Conversion

I have the relay and will be doing it soon. M1008 is on blocks right now. Many many projects going on. If it was not for this great site and the great people who all help out I would have never known about the fix. I do not post a lot but I sure do read a lot. The info here is worth gold if...

Rear Diff Smells like a Sewer PLUS: ID these diff parts???

I had a 87 chevy and I broke the rear end. I ordered new gears and installed them, who needs to shim it, broke three sets of ring and pinion gears and finally destroyed the carrier. The roar, whine or howl sound is probably the gear set up. Someone with a dial indicator and some experience...

    Front/Back wheel alignment

I have always understood that trucks made in this time frame have axles that are staggered just a bit. If you follow the tracks in the sand you will plainly see that one axle tracks a bit different. The stagger of the axles should give the rear tires ground that the front tires have not...

    Fiberglass Dash?

My dash looked so bad that I got mad and threw it in the garbage one day. Now I wish I had not done that as I am dashless. If anyone knows of a quality replacement I would be very happy. The price for new ones caused me some serious mental pain once I realized what I had done. The only place...

    M1008 Weatherstrip?

I have mine cowl, plastic screen and hood currently off my M1008. When I began cleaning out the area where the wiper control rods are I found a rats nest along with an adult sweatshirt. Down each side of the body I found tons of leaves and debris. I removed the inside cab air vents and began...

Thank you WARTHOG, this forum is such a vast bank of knowledge.

    What is this wire

Does anyone know if this wire receives 12V when the key is turned on in a M1008. If so I would like to use it for the 12V feed for an electric fuel pump when I add one. Thanks for the help.

    sea foam/spin on question

I to have had good results with seafoam. It has helped a lot of my small power equipment and atv's. I have never tried it in my M1008.

    Full floating axle question

I would just fill with oil until it starts running out the fill plug. Run it for a few days and recheck the level. No additive needed for the locker as far as I know. You should have no problem finding 80 - 90 weight gear oil at most auto parts stores.

    transmission temp

I plan on placing a sheet of aluminum cut to fit over the space above and below the heater controls. I will move the volts gauge over and place an Autometer oil pressure gauge next to it. Below the heater controls I plan on installing an Autometer trans and water temp gauges. I am still in...

    Full floating axle question

I use regular 90 weight gear oil. Some people recommend using a synthetic oil but I can not justify the cost. A good gear oil should do just fine.

    O.R.D. 4" Lift

WARWAG, I am in the process of adding the same items you have posted about. I have yet to order most of them due to my work and my truck being 1 1/2 hours away. Right now I have a DANA 60 that with the exception of the pinion gear is empty. I tore it down due to a small amount of play in the...
