Suggestion....take the leap up to an M35A3 deuce and make it 4x4 and or bob it. You start off with all kinds of goodies and they can be bought for less than the cost of a 4bt. Things on an A3....Cat 3116, Allison auto, dual circuit poser assist brakes and steering, an extra axle and...
Here is what I have gotten in the last few days;
AT-1545 Allison coreJonathan has AT-1545 Allison core that he wants to part out for a cheaper price but because i'm not in the state right now, i couldn't purchase it from him maybe you should contact it and see if he still have it for sale...
Just a suggestion....use a very light oil (like tung or raw linseed + mineral spirits) and give them a couple coats, letting it soak in thoroughly, then primer and when dry, use oil base paint, like rustoleum new camo colors in rattle cans. Getting oil to penetrate into the wood will prolong...
When you are on the M37 forum, do a search for 4bt and see if anything comes up. That has to have been a popular topic. If I recall, the 4bt is about 2x heavier.
I'd like to go with the 4.90 gears, air lockers on both 4x4 axles and lockouts on the front... but the low cost alternative is probably Detroit on just the rear.
3x4 has to be better than 2x4 and I hear tight turns are not a big issue with the Detroit.
Nice job. They really are a useful trailer. Sounds like your having fun with the fishing.
Check out the tongue. "In progress" is when I discovered the 3" was not thick enough and I needed shims.
Here is what I have to go over and not hit the racks when turning. The part going up and part of the tongue could be wider. I would like to make useful space that the angles above would not accommodate. For what, I don't know.
This is the bed going on the deuce. Ball location is first photo...
I've seen a couple of pictures but never the real thing. Finding one might be a real score !
I'm going to have to keep my upper frame narrower (than the one pictured). I have to get over the M105 bed and I left some of the rack, so need to clear it both directions turning. I think the tongue...
You are on the right track with the M105 springs, I think. My A3 is sagging too. I'm not a fan of re-arching but if done properly by a real spring shop, it might be an option. Also, if you use the very nice M105 springs on your truck, then you can take time to rebuild the truck springs for...
Wes, I like that a lot. I was thinking of about the same thing using 6x6x1/2" and 5x5x 3/8". It can simply come out for conventional tow with the military or use the 2 5/16" ball. It has to tow better with a longer tongue.
The other mod I am thinking about is a hitch that attaches back at...
Even empty the 1061 will not tow well with a pickup. It does not like to turn. M1061 GVW is 15850 and it weighs 5850 empty. Maybe a heavy one ton to go from A to B with the empty tank.
My opinion (I have an M1061) is that for static, yes it will hold that much weight once leveled (not moved).
Wondering about making an M105 into a gooseneck. Have you seen one? My under bed hitch on the A3 4x4 is about 10" behind the center of the axle. How about some ideas for using the space in front of the bed as part of the A.
