Just bought a 1954 REO M35A1 original gas engine!

You are correct on the first number. Not sure about the second. I have the parts/tools manual from 1965 and it does cover the gasser.

Just bought a 1954 REO M35A1 original gas engine!

There is a specific manual for the gas engine trucks. I’ll get mine out of the shop and give you the number. I was fortunate my truck came with them. I remember it was printed in 1954 so I doubt there is an electronic copy but I haven’t looked.

What did you do to your deuce this week?

My truck has the zerk fitting but I also have the old style curved brake handle. I have a replacement cable but it’s a newer design and requires the handle/lever replacement as well. I kept working mine back and forth and greasing it till it is almost free. The spring on the brake won’t quite...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Nice job on the hat! We didn’t get snow but over 2” of rain yesterday. I didn’t even try to move “ole Blue”. She currently doesn’t have the front axles or driveshaft but that’s next on the maintance list.

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I can assure you its a struggle to only get the items I need and not the things I want. I've probably made 5 trips over there since the end of October.

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Dipstick and Recovery4x4, thank you both for the compliments. I’m really loving the challenges it’s throwing at me as an old and military truck. Especially with it still being a gasser, parts are not always easy to find. Fortunately I’m only an hour from White Owl Parts. George has really been...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

The interior is blue but it’s the wrong shade. I haven’t dug into the paint under that but I plan to repaint the interior. It’s OD green up under the dash. There is some paint chipping in places outside and I can see bright red. Probably used as a brush truck for a fire dept was my guess. The...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I really don’t have any history on it but I can tell you the previous owner loved it. He died and the truck sat outside until the estate was settled. I bought it from the military parts dealer that got it. He knew the truck but didn’t have history on it other than the previous owner. If you do...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

My speedometer cable was full of gear oil. I actually changed it while everything was still warm and let the cable hang down and drip. Also cleaned and packed the ratio adapter full of grease. My seal leaked enough that I had spots on the tailgate. You wouldn’t think such a tiny seal that’s...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I installed my spare tire carrier and spare. It was in the bed of the truck when I bought it. I put the MRAP mirrors on. Also replaced the speedometer drive seal which actually stopped most of my transfer case leak.

    MRAP mirrors on the M35

I had the single arm lollipop mirrors but they were rectangular instead of round. Couldn’t see a dang thing behind or beside me. I added a second arm for bracing but they just didn’t work. I ordered a pair of MRAP mirrors and just got them on. The horizontal arms are the factory mirror arms. I...

    Gasser Deuce top speed?

Update. I installed a tachometer on Friday. Once I had everything connected I tried to start it. Nothing! I figured I must have messed up something in the distributor so I went back thru the distributor and checked everything. I had spark at the plug so I pulled the breather tube and splashed a...

    Gasser Deuce top speed?

Thank you sir. That’s what I wanted to hear. Monday was probably in the 50s and my engine temps were under 190 the whole trip. I’ve got good compression and it doesn’t smoke at all so I believe the engine is sound. I’ll go back over it and see if I can figure out issue. I’ll probably work on...

    Gasser Deuce top speed?

I need to make an ignition adapter for my timing light. It starts very well cold so I didn’t think about timing. I have gone through the brakes. Some were too tight but that was before the longer ride to work.

    Gasser Deuce top speed?

That’s an excellent suggestion. I’ll check that out.

    Gasser Deuce top speed?

I suspected a lean condition as well but pulling out slightly on the choke didn’t help as I expected it would if it was lean. The governor system is disabled but it’s possible I’m still having an issue with that on the carburetor. I was having a sticking throttle and it was because of the...

    Gasser Deuce top speed?

For reference, it’s a 1953 Studebaker with the 331 Reo. It runs beautifully and has recent tune up parts installed. I’ve read some members cruise at 55 and some say 45. My speedometer is functional and accurate. I know there are a few gassers on the site so I was hoping for a comment from one...

    Gasser Deuce top speed?

After several trips around the house of 10 or so miles, I decided to jump out and drive the M35 to work. It’s about 35 miles of 2 lane road, one way. 45 mph was pretty much all it would do. If I back off the throttle some I could manage 48 mph. Without a tach I don’t know engine speed but it...

    AF Blue M35

I enjoyed looking at the progress of your strata blue deuce. I just recently acquired a 53 Studebaker in air force blue. I’m torn between going back blue or making it green. The forest blue does look really nice.

    Old style horn button pics

I tried it again today and got it. I probably should’ve taken pictures but it took both hands. For future reference, the small brass washer and spring go under the retainer plate. The plastic spacer goes on top of that plate. The the medium brass cup, spring and large cup are next followed by...
