Thanks for all the info in this thread, it's helping some of us. I had the same question because when I first looked into one of these for snow plowing I heard a lot of descriptions like Dave Kay's about loud racheting and clunking noise and mine has never made that much noise. But after doing...
I know Rattlehead posted this years ago but it seems the thread has been resurrected.
One thing to consider is how much you usually drive your MV, even though they change the mix regionally, if you fill it up late summer and don't drive it much the summer fuel mix will be more likely to gel...
I have an old Boss V-plow on mine, it was installed by the National Guard with a custom welded mount. I put a new motor in last winter and ran new cables from the front battery, not sure where the headlight wires ran since they were already installed.
It may be more than the plugs, I put Wellman's in a couple months ago because I went by the Wiki for the part number without searching before I ordered. The one's I pulled out were Wellman's and had no trouble removing them, all were burned out, none badly swelled. Next set I'll order the...
I've got pics in this thread, as well as all the other winterization kit it had.

The guys telling you to RTFM are the guys that have been on here the longest and will be able to help you when you have a real problem that the manual doesn't have the answer to. They are on here all the time and get tired of answering questions that have been asked thousands of times and can...
Added a radio, nice thing to have in a plow truck!
First thing I did was the Doghead Starter mod, GP resistor bypass and new glowplugs. Then I've been overhauling the plow. But I enjoy the radio the most.
Thanks for that tip on my problem Westech, but with mine it turned out not to be the motor, but both the actual gear pump and something with batteries or charging system, the batteries tested good and alt voltages test good, so looks like I'll be pulling out the alts to get them tested. Just...
There's a pretty long discussion about results from a diesel additive study over at Diesel Place, came across it while doing a search.
Lubricity Additive Study Results - Diesel Place
Results say 2 cycle outperforms a lot of commercial additives, I use about a quart of 2 cycle and sometimes...
That's odd I picked up mine from NAPA just a couple months ago without any problem. Mine did say SME in front of the part number. Part does look the same as I remember, Doghead had mentioned in one of his posts, a discussion with someone about another relay, something about checking the relay...
The guys on this site are an amazing wealth of knowledge, but you need to read the manuals and do some research before you post basic questions. I'm new at this but I'd say at least 80% pecent of questions you should be able to get out of the manuals or the wiki on this site, the digital...
I was in the same boat as you, done basic maintenance but nothing more. I got an M1008 for a plow truck. With all the manuals and help from this site I've been able to do everything I've needed so far and learned a ton about trucks in general. The manuals are a ton better than the crappy...
I've never had an issue with Fram, I've always used 'em because it's what my Dad always had on the shelf growing up. When I went to change my oil for the first time, the only filter wrench I had was too small to fit it and I used a regular C-clamp to grab the end and that worked to loosen it up.
Do a search for plow, a few threads on here, the most recent one listed a couple makes that still had mounts for the old trucks.
Mine was a custom modified mount job, done by the Army National Guard.
If you do a seach there was a recent glowplug thread that had the Bosch part number, haven't heard anything bad about the Bosch plugs.
The job is pretty easy unless the old plugs are swollen and you can't get them out, again do a search and you'll find lots of info.
I'm going to have to search and see where the actual fuel pump is located, I didn't see it when I quickly glanced under the hood, but I'll take a better look later.
They do pump out a lot of heat, if your using the defroster, make sure you get any rock chips in your windshield repaired or they...
