Road Trip DFW to Chester IL DEC 26-JAN 9

Today we started removing the wheels. We also removed the seats, replaced the cab mount bolts after removing the last of the tool box rack brackets. Cleaned out the cab,was pretty dirty under the seats, went and sourced a very major component, and cleaned down the sacrificial lighting tower...

Road Trip DFW to Chester IL DEC 26-JAN 9

I got a good question here.. How to remove the connector in the picture. This is the connector on the M818 that is there over the pintle hook. The rubber slug with the female contacts does not seem to want to be removed. I do not see how to remove this from the frame member without cutting...

    Road trip to Alaska

I put semi tractor steer tires on the front. Note they are radials and that violates the mixing radials and bias ply rules.. I would have preferred bias ply but the radials were avail. inexpensively. Such tires can cost $300 each new anyway. The steering is improved over the NDTs.

    Road trip to Alaska

Ferro, that is a really loooong road trip.. I hope you got a good seat in that truck. Since I am on a road trip the realities of the M35 box seat have made themselves known again. I have not read the whole thread due to time the last few days so excuse me if I said the same things as others...

Road Trip DFW to Chester IL DEC 26-JAN 9

Me too! Made some good progress today. broke a few bolts, torched out a hole to push a connector out, possibly fixed a fuel leak, replaced an oil pressure gauge, lots of wenching.. I am glad Brian and Jacob are helping, as well as Brian's dad. This is a lot of fun. So here's some pictures of...

Road Trip DFW to Chester IL DEC 26-JAN 9

got in about 7 PM. The transmission being overfilled seems like the culprit due to the behavior, the hotter it got, the more likely it would be to slip. Since it only acted up Hope to check it over the next few days. Thanks you guys for the advice on it. It is rather cold here and we drove all...

Road Trip DFW to Chester IL DEC 26-JAN 9

this wants me to say "dammit boy!" which is a recent trucker saying for when someone did something stupid, at least I hear it in TX. The lubes were just done, and I thought the trans had been filled too full because of the way the guy was doing it, but couldn't tell. serves me right for being...

Road Trip DFW to Chester IL DEC 26-JAN 9

It's hard to believe this is the 4th major road tip for me in 4 years. I have a friend along this time to help in case anything goes wrong. My friend Jacob, he has a strong back, isn't afraid of adventures:grd:, and a keen eye for ladies (you ought to meet his GF:drool:), and that combination is...

    Post purchase observations and realization

instrument lighting in general is poor on these trucks. I notched a piece of 1/4" thick 3.5" aluminum relay rack panel so it would fit flat on the dask and go around the left side drivers defroster vent. I mounted a low power LED marking light strip on the underside so the light from it hits the...

engine block / pan / water heaters, road trip north Saturday

I think things are well in hand now. The magnetic oil pan heater helped the engine spin faster. It was cranking OK, not sure the RPM but it held steady. it was just that it cranked but the engine would not fire off. This only happens when it is around 35 or lower. It's probably a combination of...

engine block / pan / water heaters, road trip north Saturday

In truth I don't know what the real problem is. It has never liked starting in the cold. It should fire off especially as the fuel has been turned up a little. There does not seem to be anything wrong with the engine, runs great. No leaks in the fuel system that I have been able to find, the...

engine block / pan / water heaters, road trip north Saturday

Well it looks like some unexpectedly cold weather has come about. It could be 29 degrees Saturday night and I'll be in Little Rock. even cooler a bit farther North till the storm blows through, or not, maybe 19 at night. I wouldn't worry but I may have to start the beast early in the AM and it...
