Newbie to forum and new to 53A1

Question.. Those look like aftermarket electric wipers....like mine. Yet you still have the manual one-off switch on the hose? Correct? My wiper wires run through the hose, yet I'd like to add the old style on-off switch to make it look stock. If any assumptions are correct, how did you do it...

    Doing work....on a '54 A1

Speaking of Civil Defense.... I just bought off eBay a late '50s - early '60s Motorola portable two way radio... It has a CD sticker and serial. (Photo is off internet of a similar unit, could not upload the eBay photo). I hate to mention this, but I plan on displaying it in my USAF marked...

    Doing work....on a '54 A1

A lot of military surplus M38A1s (and other vehicles) ended up with local Civil Defense units, Civil Air Patrol, and various local and state government agencies. You can still see them with rural fire departments. Our local Fire District has two which tow plows to make fire lines on wildfires.

    Doing work....on a '54 A1

That makes sense..given the numbers I posted which came from the DB you mentioned. With #17000 in 9/52 and #48000 in 4/53...that's about 5000 A month (difficult to say since we don't know when on the month they were produced, early or late). One question...did Will's produce them on the same...

    Doing work....on a '54 A1

My unit is 82551...So 8300 units after yours. It has the same inspector's initials. Mine was built in 3/55...some 8 months later. So, by that time, production was 1000 a month. However, based on other serial numbers posted on another forum, I found that the AVERAGE production between 1952 and...

    M38A1 Fuel gauge

The guy who put it in swears it is not. But, I'll ask him to check it because: A. The units are talking to each other, so it's not totally out of whack...(makes sense to me,.how.about those of you who know more than me on this matter?). 2. Check the obvious before buying more parts.

    M38A1 Fuel gauge

When restoring n the Jeep, I was given a correct gauge, but it was not compatible with the sender, different ohms. Now this gauge is having issues. It was used and donated by a friend. So, what next..another gauge, or different sender? Also: One dealer has a NOS gauge but they want $250 for...

    M38A1 Fuel gauge

Hi The fuel gauge in my A1 always seems to read low. During restoration, it received a new sending unit, I can't recall if the gauge (a SW- 505C) is NOS or used. Despite it being full (looking down the wide mouth it is at the base of the filler tube), it still reads about a half tank (with...

    Speedometer quit working

Turned out to be a snapped cable. At first, Dave thought the Speedometer seized and the cable twisted until it broke. But when the unit was pulled, it was fine. So perhaps the cable was bound by something, perhaps the firewall. So now I have a nice NOS unit as a spare. Not actively looking to...

    Speedometer quit working

Hi, The Speedometer on my recently restored M38A1 suddenly stopped working. One minute fine, the next, well not so much. I was driving to a show and going 40 or so, nothing unusual, but it was probably more stressed than it gets on my usual neighborhood ramblings. Obviously, either the cable or...

What have you done to your JEEP today

Far be it for me to criticize Willys, but the Jeep just doesn't look stout enough for that long dual axle rear body. The Dodge 1 1/2 ton WC-62 & 63/G-507, looks more up to the task.

What have you done to your JEEP today

Thank you for the nice comment on the Jeep. His official registered name is... CH Topsfield-Sanchu Roller Coaster of Cloverhill (the dogs in the litter were all named after amusement park rides). But he is just known as "Coaster", we got him at three when he retired from the show ring. The...

What have you done to your JEEP today

It's Done!!! After about a year and a half my USAF marked M38A1 is finished after restoration by Dave Arnold in Spokane. I have mentioned it in posts 542, 544, 610, 611 and 648. To recao, started out with a very straight body with recently overhauled engine. Only rust was in fuel tank well...

What have you done to your JEEP today

THE END IS NEAR... No, I'm not a news network or politician trying to scare you into believing whatever they are selling... Instead, some good news, after18 months, there is light at the end of the restoration tunnel for my USAF marked 1955 M38A1. See previous posts and photos 542 + 544, 610 +...

What have you done to your JEEP today

Canadianz and DF... Yes, you understood my question. Your reply makes sense, thought why anyone wouldn't use the tow hooks is beyond me. Charlie, my old Jeep restorer friend said most of the work on a Jeep is undoing someone else's "work", so I can believe it.

What have you done to your JEEP today

Nice work! Good to someone making prigress. A QUESTION FOR M38A1 FANS... On the Jeep immediately abive...look at the inboard (near grille) edge of the front bumper, Looks rough and uneven. Mine is like that too. My restorer says it is a factory unit. Almost Looks like it was cut free hand...

    1966 CJ-5 to M38A1 Clone Build

Last year you asked about markings and hood numbers. In researching my anonymous M38A1, I stumbled across a suggestion from a Jeep military vehicle guy...make the last 5 digits of the hood number correspond to the Willys serial (Easy on my USAF-marked Jeep with the fiscal year number ,then the...

    M38A1 MRC 83 100 amp system

Nice looking Jeep. Is it an original USMC unit? It looks like you have had a milder winter than we have up in Washington. PS. My hat's off to anyone who can restore a Half Track. That is hard core MV work.
