    5 Ton Lug Nut Torque

    So tighten the rear lug nuts 450 - 500 (pg. 3 - 624) and the front lug nuts to 325 - 355 (pg. 3 - 621)?

    Exhaust stack gasket replacement?

The disassembly, clean, paint, and reassembly went well. Took me about 5 hours. Disassemble starting at the top and work towards the engine. Reassemble in the opposite direction -- begin near the engine and work towards the top. The muffler was a bit challenging working alone. The gaskets...

Silly me...I thought I would remove the lug nuts with a breaker bar and cheater pipe.

Is this the geared lug wrench y'all are talking about? Torque Multiplier Lug Wrench, 1:78 Ratio, Heavy-Duty: https://youtu.be/0OY40gkE0N8

Silly me...I thought I would remove the lug nuts with a breaker bar and cheater pipe.

Yesterday was the day that I finally attempted to fix that slow tire leak on my M923A1 (14.00 x 20 tires). I'll admit, I decided to go the easy route and travel about 2 miles to a local tire shop -- I've seen dump trucks and 18 wheelers getting their tires service there. Uh...this was the...

Differential fluid level -- Use a flashlight...not your finger.

If you're asking me about repacking bearings and torque, the answer is no. Haven't done that yet.

    M939 Transmission fluid level

Make sure you get the transmission to operating temp. Then place it in reverse...wait a few seconds, then place it in 1-5...wait a few seconds, then back to neutral. Then slowly pull out the dipstick, wipe it thoroughly, then reinsert and pull it out again (slowly). I highly recommend you...

Differential fluid level -- Use a flashlight...not your finger.

This is the type of "helmet" I wear when working under the truck. Light weight and almost like a cap. Not too cool, but much better than hitting my head or rubbing hair against grease.

Differential fluid level -- Use a flashlight...not your finger.

In the Lube Order (6) it states the following -- "Fill axle differentials and transfer case within 1/2 inch (12.7millimeters) of filler plug opening, when lubricant is cold, or to plug level when hot."

My Build Thread: M909 Recreational Vehicle

I didn't know man could build such things! Great job.

Differential fluid level -- Use a flashlight...not your finger.

This may be common knowledge, but it may save someone a bit of time. When changing and refilling the fluid in my differentials and transfer case I initially thought I would simply use my finger to feel the 1/2" level below the filler. That didn't seem to work; especially, after loosing some...

Ohh...Now I understand that M923's aren't just drive on Sunday vehicles.

Good story ke5eua. An 818 is a cool daily driver.

Ohh...Now I understand that M923's aren't just drive on Sunday vehicles.

I was pretty lucky. My first Military Vehicle was a M923-A1 2010 rebuild that I got from GL with only 14 hours on the engine -- very clean, beautiful. For quite some time things just kept on working perfectly so I just monitored the fluids. I thought it strange to read several posts on the SS...

This might help when torquing lug nuts.

I'm no mathematician. I hope someone with more brain cells than me can either substantiate or add to this.

This might help when torquing lug nuts.

I don't have a 450 pound torque wrench, but if I use the formula Distance = Torque/Force, I should be able to stand on a cheater pipe 2.43 feet from the lug wrench with my 185 pounds of weight and create 450 foot pounds of torque. 450 torque divided by 185 pounds (my weight) = 2.43 feet. This...

    Exhaust stack gasket replacement?

I just purchased 3 identical gaskets on Ebay for about $18 (all three). New. I don't know about the turbo size?

    Exhaust stack gasket replacement?

If you're asking me, I have an A1 (no turbo).

If you work beneath your truck, absolutely close the cab doors!

After reading all this, as standard practice I think I'm going to crawl out much further than I need to....then s-l-0-w-l-y stand up.

    Exhaust stack gasket replacement?

Thanks Sergeant Major. I'll buy the gaskets in advance of removing the exhaust -- to reduce the truck down time.

    Exhaust stack gasket replacement?

I'll soon be disassembling the exhaust stack on a M923A1 in order to clean some small rust spots and apply paint. I see in the TM that there are 3 gaskets. Is it standard practice to replace the gaskets when one disassembles the exhaust piping, or are they reusable if they look good? Any...
