you dont need a heavier-duty switch, but why have the switch as a possible failure point? putting a fuse before the switch would prevent an overdraw going through the switch. in the case of a 10amp fuse, i would run a 15amp switch.
putting the transmission in neutral will not unbind the driveline. Once the truck is running you may have to pop it into gear, put trans into D and let off of the brake while pushing the handle forward.

try shorting the two lugs on the starter with a big screwdriver (must have a plastic handle). if it cranks your issues are with the starter relay or wiring.
