I'm gonna pick up a Deuce on Tuesday!

1: Adding diesel should not be an issue - and is the fuel you should be running; gasoline should only be used when there's no alternative. 2: A rim with a flat tire that contains no air pressure is safe to handle.

    Rubber/plastics people

No need to mail one if I can get a set of numbers on the various critical dimentions, Bjorn. Let me know if you want me to try making a couple. Even if the rubber is a little soft, I suspect I can machine them with a nice sharp cutting tool and light cuts. McMaster / Carr is likely to have some...

MEP 003A, is it worth the extra $$$ for the ASK?

DH, the key may be the MEP operating RPM; those little 3600 RPM units (typical Briggs) are screamers and are annoying to listen to - but the 1800 RPM diesel MEP isn't nearly as bad, IMO. Loud the MEPs are - but the difference in 'tone' from the operating RPM being 1/2 the Briggs speed makes all...

MEP 003A, is it worth the extra $$$ for the ASK?

Perhaps; when the power is out, it doesn't really matter how much noise it makes - just as long as it keeps making noise and power. The 003A I've got doesn't have the ASK - and I can live with it and the noise it makes. If it were me and I didn't already own an MEP-003A, I'd purchase the one...

    Mep-018a

The 2A042 I've got has a brass float. I haven't looked at the TM for the 018A, but as long as the 240V single phase reconnection configuration is a three-wire output (not a 2-wire output) you're good to go.

    Rubber/plastics people

Thanks for adding the pictures, Bjorn - that helps. It looks simple enough to make - I'd be happy to make a couple for you on the lathe if a suitable material can be located that's soft enough to seal, yet firm enough to machine. Let me know if I can help. Edit: one other comment - if you're...

    Rubber/plastics people

How complicated is the sealing / plastic part of the plunger? Can it be disassembled? Just wondering if it's possible to machine a replacement sealing part from an appropriate material.

    Voltage Driving Me NUTS!

Common ground and kill switches on the positive sides of the 24V and 12V battery banks will be just fine.

    EUC and service time

It does not seem to have an effect either way.

    Voltage Driving Me NUTS!

You need at minimum two kill switches to isolate both the 12V battery and the 24V battery string. Neg or Pos should not matter for the kill switch - as long as you don't tie the Neg of the two seperate sources together, as you've done. What's likely happening is something is back-biased - like a...

    gen set prices?

I suspect he's talking about 100 Amp service @ 240V - not 120V (but as always I could be wrong); the MEP-003A is rated for 52A @ 240VAC single phase three wire. I don't know if that 100A is fully commited on that trailer or not, but I really suspect that an MEP-005 30KW unit would be more than...

    gen set prices?

Gensets that large are atypical - with the 60 KW units much more common. I suspect one of that size would be a mighty thirsty beast. What's the intended application (if you don't mind) ?

    Radiation detection

Fair enough, Chuck. No harm, no foul. You didn’t sound upset; animated - perhaps :-) I don’t see any of the military units in the normal places I’d look for one at the moment. I’ve not run across them at hamfests – but I’ve got to admit I really wasn’t looking for them, either. The 700 / 6B...

    Radiation detection

Chuck – I guess we just disagree about the relative rarity of the G-M type CDV-700 meters – I’ve seen many of them, and none of them all that costly. Cheaply made? Perhaps – but certainly functional pieces of equipment. You’re correct in that there are many more survey meters that were made...

    Radiation detection

Got to disagree with you, Chuck – there are a family of older CD yellow meters; the ones with the ionization chamber are high level units that would only be useful in a situation as you describe. The other type are the CDV-700 6B like I’ve got; modern (for a Cold War relic – circa 1962), G-M...

    rubber electrical connectors

Since this crimped connection is inside the weather-tight rubber boot, there should be no need for solder in the connection - provided it is crimped correctly, making the connection between the wire and the connector barrel 'gas tight'. If, for instance, you were using exposed civi type lugs...

What all MEP models do members have?

MEP-003A from GL; complete, wouldn't run when picked up. Replaced defective IP - now just fine, and fully operational. MEP-017A from GL; complete, needed rust cleaned out of carb from storage condensation. Now fully operational.

    AN/VRC12; AN/VRC-160 on FRS Freqs?

Even if one of these radios were capable of operation on an FRS frequency, it’s not a ‘type accepted’ radio – and you would indeed be in violation of the FCC rules. Just about any frequency allocation will require that the equipment used be type accepted in the US. Of course, the government...

    Mep-002a gen set questions?

There are TMs on this site for the MEP-002A. You need to start with the operators manual. Use the resources tab at the top of the page to go to the TM section and start downloading. If you're not getting AC power from the outlet on the front of the genset, it's likely you'll need to manually...

3 Generators - just got home from Letterkenny - not good

Sorry to hear about the dissapointing results. Hopefully, you'll be able to get at least one of them running. Get some thin oil into those stuck engines - you may be able to unstick them - and you've got nothing to loose.
