I've heard rumors of 1.75 reduction gears at the hubs and I've been trying to track a set down. The 3116 needs to be spinning ~1800 for best fuel consumption. I've also pursuing a reduction hub eliminator kit which would get cruise rpm to that range, but not sure...
The rear as in back axle, not the intermediate axle. The intermediate axle is unique to the MTV.

Front and rear axles are the same from 4X4 to 6X6. One issue that you may consider is the frame rails are made of heat treated steel, so cutting/welding etc could very well weaken it.
I don't think you will end up any cheaper than buying a 4X4..

The M1078 will fit in a C130 if the suspension is compressed using the on board hydraulics, and air the front tires down to 16 psi. The M1081 is used for air Drop Operations. The Air drop pallet is too tall for the standard M1078 so the M1081 has all the removable stuff.
