M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

I got the rim on the bench in the shop. It's a heavy sucker! I'm guessing the big part of the rim weighs around 70 lbs, and the beadlock flange that bolts to the rim weighs around 30 lbs. I got it on the bench and chased the threads on the rim studs with a die. The threads were pretty...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

I'm in the midst of swapping the old 365/80R20s on my M35A3 to some pre-loved 395/85R20s. This swap has successful results documented throughout the Steel Soldiers forums, so I decided to take the plunge. I would've liked to stick with 365s because I like the look of them, but I was able to...

    Deuce Tire Covers

I might see if I can get a set for my pre-loved 395s. Although I'm a little concerned about them trapping moisture. Then again I see campers and RVs have them on all the time, so I guess that's not an issue?

    M35a2 Boyce Equipment

According to the urban dictionary, duece is a way to vocalize the "peace" hand sign :alien: So I guess we're all driving for peace :naner:

    M35a2 Boyce Equipment

And what if you get that deuce stuck? Bobbed, the truck probably still weighs about 10000 lbs, and you'll still need someone to help you get unstuck. A modern pickup weighs about half that and can do what you want it to even better and with more comfort! My opinion: get a decent used modern...

Good read on brake line tube testing

Thanks for posting! If I remember correctly, I think some parts vendors are selling copper brake line kits for the old Jeeps. I think my dad bought a set for his M38A1. That said, every time I go under the truck to bleed the air tanks, I visually check for any brake fluid leaks around the...

    Replacement two-piece rim nuts?

Erik doesn't have the nuts in right now. Oshkosh and Big Mike's has them, though shipping is expensive - maybe I can ask them to use a USPS flat rate box instead. Memphis Equipment has rim nuts that will fit 5/8" studs for the M939A2, which confuses me because I thought that was exclusively an...

    Replacement two-piece rim nuts?

I wrecked the original two-piece rim lock nuts off my M35A3 rim (tip - don't run a tap all the way through the lock nuts  Yeah not happy with myself!). I know they're the same lock nuts that came on the M939A2 rims, so I was wondering where the 5-ton folks are getting their replacements...

    M35A3 bead lock suggestions

I have a little update to share with my project - I managed to pull the bead lock insert out of the old tire with a floor jack, chain, two 3.5 ft pry bars, and a 4x4 wood block. I probably didn't even need the floor jack, or could've substituted it with another pry bar. I'll make a video when...

    M35A2 project

Amazing what lighting does for colors. Years ago my dad bought a CJ-5 at night that looked candy apple red in a garage. Next morning in the sunlight it turned out it was actually orange!

    M35A2 project

I like your paint booth setup. I've considered getting a tent shelter to do rim work and painting throughout the next few weeks since my shop is TINY!

How to change an M35a3 tire / stop air leaks / Picture by Picture

I like this PDF a lot. I've been referring to it throughout my tire replacement project. The one thing I'd change is that a regular 5-gallon bucket won't cut it for removing the rim from the tire! I suggest using wood blocks or an engine hoist instead.

    M35A3 Neutral Safety Switch?

You're welcome! When I just searched the part number in the parts and special tools book, the neutral safety switch showed up on a page with other miscellaneous items without showing its location. When I searched the general support manual it came up in the transmission replacement workflow...

    M35A3 Neutral Safety Switch?

Ok, I stand corrected. The truck does have a neutral safety switch just like you found. I never tested it so I didn't know it existed, especially based on my reading of the operator's manual. But my memory can be a little fuzzy :p The safety switch is #8 on the diagram for both transmission...

    M35A3 Neutral Safety Switch?

I'm sorry to read about your bad luck! I don't think there's a neutral safety switch on the truck. IIRC the manual makes it very clear that the truck must be in neutral for startup and shutdown otherwise death or injury to personnel may result (their words!). Did you check the ignition switch...

    FMTV vs International Navistar Family

The one with the super-extended cab can seat 9 people. That would be the way to cart my family to and from car shows!

    FMTV vs International Navistar Family

These trucks seem like a no-brainer to procure - civilian comforts and military capabilities. I know the FMTV is more comfortable than the trucks before it, but I think I'd rather get one of the Internationals. I saw a video of a Navistar wrecker recovering a buried MRAP. Are the Navistar...

    FMTV vs International Navistar Family

Is engine power the main advantage of the Navistar trucks? Last I knew they used 300+ HP commercial truck diesels, a little more oomph than the Cats in the FMTV.

    FMTV vs International Navistar Family

I'm not too familiar with the International Navistar family of offroad trucks other than them being the basis of a few MRAPs. I just realized there are wrecker and cargo variants. Why are these a thing when the FMTV exists? How do they compare to the FMTV and older trucks the FMTV replaced?

    M35A3 Transmission Temp

I'm still running 15W-40 in mine, so that temperature difference makes sense.
