Do you have 12 volts on the Pink/Black wire that goes to the other small terminal on the relay?
If not, them you may have a blown fuse in the fuse box. Should be fuse #17
Your way is fine. In all actuality it is a full proof way to ensure the that the GP under test is actually functioning properly.
The ohm test is a good first "Go or No Go" test. If it's high resistance or open it probably is defective. After the ohm test it would be a good idea to put the GP...
I put them on to aid with troubleshooting. A quick glance at it will visually confirm certain functions.
Saves time and effort trying to get a volt meter up under the dash.

The GPD3.1 cards have a few minor engineering changes that are not on the previous cards. Otherwise they look and function the same.
Yes you can still easily add a manual back up momentary switch to the GPD3.1 card.

The GP cards have 3 LED indicators.
GREEN -- Card has power applied to it.
YELLOW-- Same a WAIT light
RED -- Card is sending ground command to the GP relay
That's similar to what I did to my M1009.
I added a volt meter that shows the voltage on the glow plug side of the relay when the glow plug relay is closed. After the glow plug relay opens, the volt meter indicates the 12 volt side of the vehicle electrical system.

Over voltage and reverse voltage are the most common reasons for GP card failures.
Send me your card and I may be able to tell you what caused the failure.
It might even be repairable.
